Book Review: The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket

The Bad Beginning
A Series of Unfortunate Events
by Lemony Snicket
Published: September 30, 1999
Publisher: Scholastic, Inc
Age Demographic: Middle Grade Mystery
Pages: 176

Dear Reader,

I'm sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

(Note: I have purchased my own Kindle copy of this book and am sharing my honest opinion in this review.)

The Bad Beginning is a cleverly written and fun read for anyone who enjoys middle grade books. I'm really starting to finally understand the appeal of reading them. I honestly can't believe I haven't already read this series in its entirety already, because it's right up my street.

Whimsical and full of mystery, these characters are wonderfully developed and interesting. Snickett pens an extraordinarily wonderful and uniquely entertaining story revolving around three young children who become orphans after their parents die in an unfortunate house fire and they are sent to live with a distant relative until they are of age. The use of mature words and the interesting way that Snickett gives their meaning, flows wonderfully well with the voice he uses to tell the story. I had thought at first that it might annoy me if it were to continue on throughout the book, but it actually didn't. It's smart, fun, and intelligent in a very captivating and clever way. This book reads as if the author himself is talking directly to you, which gives it more of a personal feel and was something that I came to truly enjoy quite a bit.

There's this dark and creepy, unfortunate gloom to the atmosphere that manages to put a chill in your bones. Unquestionable things happen in this book, abominable things that would turn anyone's stomach most especially Count Olaf's intentions where Violet is concerned. The kicker for me is that there is so much dry humor injected into this tale of woe and sorrow, that it truly is a series of unfortunate events, that have become far too clever for its own good. I will definitely be continuing on with the series to see what happens next, as far as the Baudelaire children are concerned.

The Bad Beginning is a wonderful start to a very incredibly fun, entertaining, and captivating middle grade series that I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys them.

Book Review: The Iron Trial (Magesterium #1) by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black

The Iron Trail
Cassandra Clare & Holly Black
The Iron Trial
Magesterium #1
Cassandra Clare & Holly Black
Published: September 9, 2014
Publisher: Double Day Children's Book
Age Demographic: Middle Grade
Pages: 295

From NEW YORK TIMES bestselling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare comes a riveting new series that defies what you think you know about the world of magic.

From two bestselling superstars, a dazzling and magical middle-grade collaboration centering on the students of the Magisterium, an academy for those with a propensity toward magic. In this first book, a new student comes to the Magisterium against his will -- is it because he is destined to be a powerful magician, or is the truth more twisted than that? It's a journey that will thrill you, surprise you, and make you wonder about the clear-cut distinction usually made between good and evil.

Holly Black please visit: Amazon & B&N

(Note: I received an ARC of this book through ATW ARC Tours, in exchange for an honest review which I have posted here on the blog and on Goodreads.)

The fantasy world of magic has been around for ages within the history of fiction and it's no surprise that both Cassandra Clare and Holly Black, have managed to written about it so wonderfully in their first collaboration together, The Iron Trial . The moment when I first discovered they were teaming up to write a novel together, I was immediately excited and intrigued. These are two of my favorite author's who are always on my auto-buy list and even though I don't usually read much Middle Grade fiction at all, I was definitely excited to get my hands on a copy of this for sure. I knew without a doubt that it would be an amazing story full of twists, turns, magic, and fantasy lore that I would fall in love with. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint in the least little bit.

I love how they took this magical world that they created, which did have Harry Potter-esque similarities, and created their own wonderfully unique and original spin on things. The idea of a magical school being recognized for the good the magic does in the world, as simply turned on its head and spun in a different direction, as the idea that maybe that isn't the case after all was highlighted as well. I loved this book for so many reasons, that it's completely unreal. Questions were raised, twists and turns happened, an ending that you weren't expecting happened, and so much more. One of the things that appealed to me the most, was the fact that the characters in this book were written in such a realistic way. They were described one way in the synopsis and you get the sense that they are going to be that and much much more, but when you start getting lost within the pages of The Iron Trial , you start to see that they are just regular twelve year old's dealing with normal things and then they have magic school on top of that. Their actions, the way they handle things, the insecurities, everything about them was like any twelve year old would be and that was definitely a breath of fresh air.

Callum was ever bit as mischievous and insecure, as any twelve year old boy his age would be. He lacked the tact that an older boy would have and he was more rash in his anger than I would have imagined him to be. Still, though, it worked so wonderfully well for his character, in the fact that he was able to come off looking and acting his age. You can look at this book in the sense that it's a story about a kid who was told all of his life that mages are dangerous and will do dangerous things to you if they get a hold of you, and that if you end having to take the test to get into the magic school that you potentially might have to attend, you better fail the test. At least this is the way that Cassandra Clare has described this character to be and I can see why she would, because that's exactly how I ended up feeling about him and his story this book had to tell. So the next question that naturally follows, is what happens when failing doesn't help to save him after all?

For me, that's such an interesting concept, that I couldn't help but jump on board with it and gobble it up, to see what would happen next.

All of the characters, including Call's friends Tamra and Aaron were so full of intriguing depth, that lent themselves very well to the story at hand. Charming and full of charisma, these characters were so much fun to get to know and the world of magic they found themselves in, the missions they took, were so amazing to experience with them. Watching them grow and evolve into a more mature twelve year old, was fantastic and I loved every single minute of it.

The world building was just as enjoyable as the characters and the plot of the book, though there were questions that were raised that I would have liked to have been answered, I'm hoping that the second book in this four book series is going to help to explain that. The handpicked groups of children from the different masters, helped to make the concept of magic school a little more original and unique. It definitely worked in Cassandra and Holly's favor, which made me love this book even more. Wonderfully developed and executed well, the plot of this novel was something else to read about. I had so many questions, very minor frustrations, and I never really saw the ending coming at all. This is something that definitely makes me want to pick up the next book in this series.

While there are things that I didn't quite understand about the ending, I am hoping the second book will explain that as well and help me to better understand it. This is just a first book in a series that I feel I am sure to fall in love with and will definitely end up on my auto-buy list, because the twists and swerves this book takes you are just as surprising as what you thought was going to happen next, was the exact opposite and sometimes you missed the mark completely. This is what I call a fantastic read with a lot of action, suspense, lots of surprises, and wonderful characters in store for you. I would definitely recommend this book to you, if you're the type of readers who enjoy fantasy books with endearing characters, interesting missions, and a little bit of mischief. The characters are real, the plot is a lot of fun, and the magic definitely makes the book worth reading.

❝My Thoughts❞

Heirs of Prophecy is thrilling magical fantasy land of fun and excitement. Michael Rothman holds nothing back, as he brings an incredibly interesting and adventure filled novel sure to whisk anyone away on a whirlwind ride of originality, mystery, and supsense. It's fun filled fascination all the way around, from the unexpected sidetrip to Trimoria, to unique ways of the land and its habitants, to the strange powers that each of the Riverton family members gain. In many ways, those who enjoyed the Harry Potter series and The Unwanted's series, will surely fall in love with this one, as it sparkles to life with so much bright vivid imagination that readers will be left craving more of this unique story with it's own twists and turns of dangerous peril and magical trials.

Heirs of Prophecy is a wonderfully written plot driven novel, with a few unexpected twists and turns along the way. It's virtually a thrill-ride for those seeking adventure, prophecies set into motion, merciless wizard's, and the good versus evil. It's almost as if Michael Rothman wrote this novel in such a way that it would mean a return to innocence in a way. This is part of what makes this book such a delightful and fun read, almost whimsical in a sense. The conflict is almost palpable and intense as any great epic battle between good and evil, that's brewing. This helps to heighten the suspense to a degree and give the story being told a little more depth and layers.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels and longs to return to their innocence, once again. It's just an epic filled adventure that ends on one crazy cliffhanger that is sure to have readers hanging onto the edge of their seats, waiting for the next book in the series. It's incredibly easy to devour and so much fun to read.

Guest Post: Dream Casting the Characters
by Michael A. Rothman

If these books were to ever be made into a television series or movie, who would you choose to portray the main characters and why.

I’ll freely admit that I am terrible with names, and worse with today’s actors and actresses. So before I responded, I consulted with some experts.

I talked to my wife and kids, the ones who I admittedly modeled the main Riverton characters against at least in spirit. They seemed to have some opinions about who would play their characters, where I might otherwise be horribly wishy-washy.

These choices were largely based on the general “look” of the actor or actress as well as exhibited personalities that the actor has portrayed in the past.

Jared Riverton (patriarch of the Rivertons) – Brendan Fraser
Aubrey Riverton (matriarch of the Rivertons) – Sandra Bullock

Ryan Riverton (oldest of the Riverton children) - Daniel Radcliffe (of Harry Potter fame), or possibly Zac Efron.
Aaron Riverton (younger of the Riverton brothers) – Jamie Bell, Taylor Lautner, or possibly Elijah Wood.

Sloane Lancaster (a love interest of one of the Riverton boys and main character) – Saoirse Ronan.
Arabelle (a love interest of one of the Riverton boys, and a main character in the prequel novel to be released later this year) – Anna Kendrick.

Dominic Sweeney (someone who shows up in HEIRS, but becomes a much more prominent role in TOOLS OF PROPHECY) – Robert Pattinson (played Cedric Diggory, and more recently Edward Cullen in the ‘Twilight’ saga).

Labri (An elf who has a major role in TOOLS OF PROPHECY) – Emma Watson
Ellisandrea – (The Elf Queen / a villain in the first two books) – Angelina Jolie.

So needless to say, despite the author not having too much a strong opinion about casting of characters in the book, some of my family which strongly influenced the material definitely had opinions on such things. J

Now that the names have been put down, and I can see the faces, I am wondering when those movie studios will start their casting calls. Okay...one thing at a time. ;-)

Don't forget the to tune in for the next part of this exciting fantasy tale...

The TOOLS OF PROPHECY is the second volume in an epic saga which describes a prophecy that has placed the Riverton brothers in the lead roles of a struggle to save their world from being overrun by unspeakable horrors. This destiny requires that they face off with the demons that nearly destroyed their world over five centuries ago.

In the first book, the population of wizards had been practically eradicated by the former tyrant. The Rivertons are now charged with creating an Academy of Magic, recruiting qualified students, and furthering their own training with secrets that have long been held by the reclusive elves.

Despite their youth, a mysterious spirit has engaged them in an epic struggle to gain mastery of their newfound skills, help raise and train two armies, and stay alive long enough for their final showdown with destiny.

The only things that stand in their way are the assassins hired to destroy them and the Demon Lord’s minion who holds a personal grudge and intends to witness the young boys’ deaths.

I am an Army brat and the first person in my family to be born in the United States. This heavily influenced my youth by instilling a love of reading and a burning curiosity about the world and all of the things within it. As an adult, my love of travel allowed me to explore many unimaginable locations. I participated in many adventures and documented them in what will be a series of books, the first of which you have just read.

Some might put these books in the Fantasy genre, and I never had issues with this label. After all, the adventures were, without any doubt in my mind, fantastic. I simply quibble with the label of "Fiction" that some might put on these tales. These tales should be viewed as historical records, more along the lines of a documentary.

I've learned one thing over the years. Magic is real. Keep exploring, and you too will find your magic.

❝My Thoughts❞

Everyone, young or old, loves ghost stories, spooky legends, and things that go bump in the night. The Girls' Guide To Ghost Hunting is chalk full of creepy fun, like haunted objects, the history of ghosts and spirits, cool investigation tips for hunting and tracking ghosts and their activity, lots of fun activities to liven things up, and so much more! It's a ghostly entertaining book that covers all things supernatural in such a lively and entertaining way that will definitely keep readers engaged and captivated as they flip through the pages. There are even some spook-tac-ular snackish recipies that are sure to be delicious. What fan of paranormal activities wouldn't enjoy this book?

Urban legends have always been my favorite thing, when it comes to the scary fun stuff. You know, the stories that are usually told while sitting around campfire's meant to scare the boogiedy out of you. Stacey Graham did a wonderful job of intertwining them throughout the book at the ends of every chapter, to give it that overall erie feel that would cause thrills and chills. The history was rich and interesting without being too clinical and stuffy and there was some super fantastic insider information too.

There's just so many things that make this book a lot of fun for younger girls, while still being cute and enjoyable enough for to slightly appeal to older ones as well. I would definitely recommend this book to any middle grader who enjoys the paranormal and striking out on their own to hunt a ghost or get in touch with the other side.
