Blog Tour & Giveaway: The Morrigan by Laura DeLuca

YANR_BlogTour_Morrigan

Author Laura DeLuca has stopped by for with a guest post for the Morrigan Blog Tour.

"My Real Life Werewolf"

People always ask writers where they get their ideas from. For me, most of my ideas initiate from dreams. I am one of those New Age gals who keeps a little dream journal by my bed so I can jot down all my dreams as soon as I wake up. I do this not just for writing purposes but because I am a believer in the symbolism behind our dreams.I believe they are often our subconscious or even the spirit world trying to communicate with us. It was years ago that my muse came to me with the initial seed that would later grow into Morrigan. One night about ten years ago, I had a dream about a man coming through a magic portal and taking me to a fairytale world. The dream was brief and there wasn't much detail, but it stuck with me for years. I wanted to make it into a book, but it wasn't until I met my husband many years later that the rest of the pieces fell into place.

Meeting my husband ties into dreams as well. When we met, I was messing around on an internet dating site. I know it sounds pathetic, but for a single mom in a small town, there was no other way to meet new people who weren't drunken losers. Well, some of them still turned out to be drunken losers, or married losers, or reverends of the jedi order--but that's another story. It wasn't something I took seriously. I wasn't looking to find true love or get married. I was just looking to have fun on my nights without kids. I never planned on getting married again. I had walked away from a bad marriage that could have destroyed me emotional and financial, and picked up the pieces and rebuilt a good life for me and my two children. I had a great job, bought a house, and was the epitome of a strong, independent women. Not that falling in love would make you weak. I just wasn't interested. Then one day I get an email on Yahoo personals from this guy named Timmie. He had no picture. Normally this was a huge red flag. It usually meant one of two things--they were hideously deformed or married. As someone with a love of the Phantom of the Opera, it was more the married part that concerned me. I had been on the other end of a cheating husband and didn't take kindly to being placed in the role of the other women. My normal instinct to those emails was to ignore them. Yet, this time, my instincts told me the opposite and I knew why. This is where dreams come back into play. The reason I kept reading that email from the imageless man was because his name was Timmie and Timmie was my dream man. Quite literally.

In my novel, Morrigan often muses about the dark knight who had haunted her dreams for as long as she can remember. For me, Timmie had been in my dreams since I was a child. He was even my imaginary friend when I was little. I still had the dreams occasionally, but I had long since given up on any visions of love that might come from them. Then I got this email and I knew I had to reply. The funny thing is, I told this mysterious Tim from the start that I was only replying to him because of my dreams. That would have scared most normal guys away. Of course, my dream man isn't normal. What fun would that be?

In was only a week later that I met Timmie for the first time. He was sitting on a bench in our designated public meeting place, and I knew for sure it was him even before formal introductions were made. My feelings from that first glance were exactly the same as Morrigan's the first time she saw Filtiarn.

Instantly, all her worries and fears vanished. It was as if an angel had miraculously appeared in her moment of turmoil, albeit a scruffy and somewhat rugged looking angel. He was amazing—a walking piece of medieval art. She swore beams of light illuminated him in a strange, unearthly glow. She wasn’t even sure if he was real or just another vision. There were two things she knew with absolute certainty from the first second she saw him. She was recklessly in love with him, and it completely terrified her.

The fact that Morrigan dreamed of Filtiarn is not the only similarity between Morrigan's love interest and mine. From out first date, Timmie enchanted me with his tales of his cross county travels. He was once a dread-locked hippie who traveled with the Rainbow Gathering, slept under bridges, and even lived in a cave for three months. Now, the average girl would who heard these stories on a first date would probably wish she had a cave to hide in. Not me. Timmie was refreshing and unique. This was the first date I had since my divorce that didn't leave me rolling my eyes. A rainbow even appeared in the sky as we walked along the boardwalk, a sign of new beginnings (you might recognize this scene if you've read Phantom).

That look on his face is classic Filtiarn

Of course, I can't fail to mention the physical traits that Filtiarn inherited from Timmie. Just a few weeks into our relationship, he had earned the nickname of Chewy because he is literally covered in hair. He is the reason for the term "five o'clock shadow". I could probably braid the hair of his arms and legs. Even his fingers and toes have hair! As I was working on my character development, this character that Timmie inspired could only be one type of creature. Thus Filtiarn "King of the Wolves" was created--a werewolf. He has Timmie's hairiness, his musical abilities (though I switched it from a saxophone to a panflute), and of course, his witty sarcasm.

“Humph.” Tiarn grunted and curled his lip. “You call that filthy! You obviously do not know the meaning of the word. That place we just came from—what do you call it? Baltimore? Cement covering the Goddess’ green earth. Wires blocking the view of Father Skye. Pollution making it difficult to breathe, and litter everywhere you look. That was filth. The dust on those blankets is just good old-fashioned dirt. Honest to goodness, deliciously clean dirt! You should revel in it, Princess! The bed where you shall lay your head this night is the cleanest and purest you have rested on in many moons.

So often I have seen people turn up their nose at the idea of "instalove", saying its unrealistic. I can tell you first hand, there's nothing unrealistic about it. But this love at first sight phenomenon isn't as instant as it seems. My relationship with my husband didn't start in this life. I have had several past life regressions that included him, some of which he was also recalled. So in my mind, "instalove" is really a love between two old souls who have found each other for first time in a new life. This is a love that has spanned through countless lifetimes and that even death could not destroy. Timmie is my soul mate, my inspiration, and the reason Morrigan became my most popular book to date. I love my real life werewolf, in this life and the next!

I can't wait to see what Aimee Carter comes up with next. Whatever it is, I know it'll be definitely worth the wait and tons of exciting.

"What Makes the Goddess Series so Divine?"

For me what makes the Goddess series so memorable and divine, are some of the beautiful quotes and passages that make up the series as a whole. Aimee Carter's writing is wonderfully fun, rich, entertaining, as well as gorgeous sometimes. There have been a few times where I've been inspired by some of those passages and I thought I'd share them with you today and see what you think.

“Keep trying until you have no more chances left.”

“Sometimes we misjudge what is possible and what is not.”

“Did you know,” he said, his breath warm on my cheek, “that that is the first time anyone has ever told me they loved me?” Startled, I did the only thing I could think of—I kissed him again. “You’d better get used to hearing it more often, because I plan on saying it to you an awful lot.”

“It hurts being the one who loves more”

“Being with Henry doesn't mean you have to give up who you are. Henry doesn't define you.”

“You never had to fight for me to begin with. I am yours and have been from the moment I saw you.”

In her he saw possibility. In her he saw the future. And when she was ready for it, he would be, too.”

“It takes loneliness in oneself to recognize it in another.”

“Love is the way I feel for you, the way you fill something inside me whenever you so much as walk into the same room. Sometimes love is quite, lingering in the background until you least expect it. But love it always there for you.”

“Sadness doesn't equal weakness, sweetheart. If anything, it shows the love you have inside of you, and nothing stronger in this world exists.”

“Live this love now," I whispered. "And never stop.”

“I don't need to be ancient to be worth something.”

The Goddess Inheritance is a lovely send off to a wonderful trilogy that has captivated many readers. Anyone who enjoys Greek mythology with an interesting spin on narrative and various characters, will enjoy this series. It's a lighthearted and charming read, that is sure to entertain and wow fans of this series. Although, it's been a thrilling and exciting ride for Kate, everything that's culminated over the last two books, comes to a pretty good conclusion in this final installment of the trilogy. Aimee Carter's top notch writing style and wonderful narrative will definitely pull readers in and breathless with anticipation as they thumb through the pages.

Throughout this whole entire wonderful series, all of Carter's characters have been brilliantly complex and wonderfully entertaining. It was interesting to finally see what Callipe and Cronus wanted from Kate. Callipe wants Henry and Cronus wants what is Henry's, which unfortunately for Henry and much to Kate's dismay, turns out to actually be Kate. So, both he and Calliope team up and work together to kidnap Kate and set their plan to obtain what they each want into motion. It ends up turning into a wild and crazy exciting, but very fun rollercoaster ride of emotion.

Aimee Carter explores the delicate territory of love, sacrifice, and compassion in such an emotionally well balanced and simple way. These are the the wonderful aspects of the book that make it out stand out and shine, as a final chapter to such a well written and enjoyable trilogy. These are also wonderful attritubes to the characters as well, which make them even more likable and easy for readers to connect with on an emotional level. Love, sacrifice, and compassion sort of becomes their quiet vulnerable strength in such a fantastic way that makes them shine on the pages, particular in Kate's sense of self. The different perspectives on the myths are also what gives this final book in this series the pop and zing that it needs.

This trilogy is a must read for anyone who enjoys Greek mythology. They'll definitely want to snap it up and enjoy it.

Book Format: Paperback; pp 256
Age Demographic: Young Adult
amazon | b&n

A rogue virus that kills pregnant women has been let loose in the world, and nothing less than the survival of the human race is at stake.

Some blame the scientists, others see the hand of God, and still others claim that human arrogance and destructiveness are reaping the punishment they deserve. Jessie Lamb is an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl living in extraordinary times. As her world collapses, her idealism and courage drive her toward the ultimate act of heroism. She wants her life to make a difference. But is Jessie heroic? Or is she, as her scientist father fears, impressionable, innocent, and incapable of understanding where her actions will lead?

Set in a world irreparably altered by an act of biological terrorism, The Testament of Jessie Lamb explores a young woman's struggle to become independent of her parents. As the certainties of her childhood are ripped apart, Jessie begins to question her parents' attitudes, their behavior, and the very world they have bequeathed her.

Summary taken from Amazon.

❝My Thoughts❞

The Testament of Jessie Lamb is a powerfully suspenseful dystopian novel, that readers will be unable to put down. It is wonderfully engaging, full of so many questions, and terrifying realism underneath its own breed of chaos and destruction. The pages are full of consequences, actions, decisions, and determination through strength of courage and sacrifice. It's an unsettling world that Jane Rogers has penned, but an incredibly captivating and intoxicatingly dangerous one as well. The twists and turns are unpredictable, the characters are interesting and likable with their own personal flare, and the world building and main plot of the novel is very well developed and executed flawlessly.

Jessie is an incredibly determined heroine who is easy to relate to and likable. She's grown up in a scarey society brimming with biological terrorism. Human survival is pretty much at stake, when dealing with MDS "Maternal Death Syndrom" a virus that pregnant women have become very susceptiable to. It isn't known where the virus originated from, but the affects are extremely deadly laying waste to the brain cells of any pregnant woman that contracts it. Jessie has the strength of conviction and belief that she can make a difference, the only problem is that her father has a difference of opinion. She believes that she, along with her friends, can change the world and and help to find a vaccine for the virus in an effort to save the human race.

The Testament of Jessie Lamb is an incredibly compelling story filled with desperation and hope, for a better future. It's is chilling and suspenseful in many ways, which have readers on the edge of their seats catching their breath in anticipation of the outcome. The scary thing is, the events that are occurring in the novel are hauntingly realistic and could possibly happen in the near distant future. This book would make such a fantastic discussion for any book club, as it leaves readers questioning so many things going on within the pages. It was a deep riveting and wonderfully engaging read.

"This is just something I have to do, okay?" I hear David say. "The right thing."

He cradles my face in his hands. He kisses me hard. Then he lets go of me. His eyes dart from me to whatever's next.

All she wants is for him to stay. She's been doing pretty well, pretending he doesn't have to go. But one day, after one last night to remember, she wakes up and there's no denying it anymore. He's gone.

When Penna Weaver's boyfriend goes off to Iraq, she's left facing life without him. As summer sets in, Penna tries to distract herself with work and her art, but the not knowing is slowly driving her crazy. Especially when David stops writing.

She knows in her heart he will come home. But will he be the same boy she fell in love with?

* Summary taken from Goodreads.

❝My Thoughts❞

Karen Schreck pens a poingnant and inspiring story of love and war, trials and tribulations, and finding oneself. While He Was Away is brimming with a storm of conflicting emotions wide enough to open the flood gates of fear, pride, sadness, and love so deep and beautiful that it will leave reader's breathless. The vibrant cast of characters with their own unique personalities and fascets are sure to tug at their heart strings.

Penna was a delightful character to read about. She was both strong and fearful for David in her love and unwavering support, as he made what he thought was the right decision to serve his country by enlisting in the Army and going to Iraq. There was an overwhelming surge of pride that rose up inside of me, when she finally stood up to ber mother enough to find out more of her family's history. It was endearing to see Penna pick up and choose to have a relationship with her grandmother after all this time not really knowing her at all or much about her.

The love and stability of Penna and David's relationship was breath taking and beautiful to see unfold. Their level of trust, committment, and support despite the short amount of interaction or communication they were given was absolutely awe inspiring. These two truly share a love that is rare to younger couples where most young adult fiction is concerned. They have such a shared sense of understanding between the two, that it's nice to see how real and honest their relationship was. There were moments that I wanted to cry, because it was so beautiful.

While He Was Away is a beautiful tale of love that will take reader's on a journey through the highs and lows along with the difficulties of maintaning a long distance relationship. It isn't an easy thing to do, but sometimes if you truly love something then you're presented with the difficult task of letting that something go. It is a story that does a brilliant job of illustrating that sometimes bits and pieces of life cannot be wrapped up so neatly all nice and pretty. Life and relationships are just not that containable. They are messy, complicated, complex, and filled with so many overwhelming emotions that are raw and burn to the core.

It is a wonderful book full of self-discovery, love, and sacrifice that I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoy's contemporaries. This isn't your happily ever after, but sometimes the greatest love stories of all don't have happy endings.

As in steamy, sultry, blazing, scathing, illuminating, fiery, incendiary, spicy, enlightening, searing, scorching. A wildfire. A prairie burn. An inferno of characters, settings, plots. A refiner’s fire that draws out pure gold.

YA can also be cold.

As in chill, bitter, harsh, blustery, caustic, shivery, biting, hard-edged, cool. A frigid wind that dips below zero. A blizzardy drift of ideas and images. One snowflake never like the next. And once all hell freezes over, than YA can be the sharp-edged ax that breaks through the ice of your soul.

YA lit—good YA lit—is never, ever lukewarm.

Not in terms of content—the fearless stories told, the layers of meaning revealed.

Not in terms of character—these people live on the pages, and like most adolescents (or the adolescent in all of us, who lives on and on and on) their motivation frequently cuts to the quick: they are desperately trying to figure out just who in God’s name they are.

And YA lit is never, ever lukewarm or tepid in terms of voice—which is so driven by character, setting, and plot, and which defines each YA novel—that distinct, one-of-a-kind voice that speaks a book into existence, that prods and goads and compels a writer—me—to tell the story.

This is just a little bit of why YA rocks my world—why I love writing and reading books for teens. Or, supposedly for teens, since most street smart and literary savvy adults worth their salt know that Young Adult Fiction is among the best literature out and about today.

For Tristan Hart, everything changes with one crashing wave.

He was gone for three days. Sucked out to sea in a tidal wave and spit back ashore at Coney Island with no memory of what happened. Now his dreams are haunted by a terrifying silver mermaid with razor-sharp teeth.

His best friend Layla is convinced something is wrong. But how can he explain he can sense emotion like never before? How can he explain he’s heir to a kingdom he never knew existed? That he’s suddenly a pawn in a battle as ancient as the gods.

Something happened to him in those three days. He was claimed by the sea…and now it wants him back.

❝My Thoughts❞

The Vicious Deep is a wonderfully action packed fish-out-of-water tale, that will captivate readers with its unexpected twisty-plot and hilarious yet sometimes sensitive male protagonist. It's full of wonder, creative narrative, and awesome moments of wow sure to get any readers blood pumping! Zoraida Cordova pens a delicious blend of humor, danger, and excitement. She manages to accomplish telling a brilliant mer-tale, by doing things a little differently than most mermaid books. Tristan is actually the sea creature, thrust into a situation that he knew absolutely nothing about and more than a little freaked about it. He is a wonderful character to get to know and readers will find him extremely likable, with his laid back ways and approach to dealing with things.

The vicious deep world that Zoraida Cordova builds, is simply breath taking and hauntingly beautiful. It feels as if readers are plunged into a world full of darkness and wonder, yet teaming with suspenseful murky secrets hidden in its depths. The characters are well developed and likable, the writing is strong and intriguing, and the story itself is highly engaging. The Vicious Deep is a fast paced enjoyable mer-tale that will have readers on the edge of their seats, craving the next installment. It's definitely an "at the top of the pile" to-be-read book for anyone who enjoys sparkling tales of underwater fantasy.

This isn't your typical mer-tale, what doesn't seem to work so much in other's, definitely works well in this one. It's sort of what sets it apart and makes it such an amazing debut novel. Readers will appreciate the lightness and witty humor that it provides, along with the dangers and the thrills beyond the sea. The romance is sweet and understated, never taking over from the main plot which is refreshing in so many ways. The Vicious Deep is a delightful novel that readers will not want to put down.
