Book Review for The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
Published: September 18, 2012
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Age Demographic: YA Paranormal
Pages: 416

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

Maggie Stiefvater creates a stunning new spellbinding world that captures spirit, intrigue, and beautifully crafted world building with, The Raven Boys. She weaves together, once again, a beautiful illusive tapestry of myths, legend, and psychic abilities that will eagerly draw reader's in and keep them deeply entrenched in the rich details the story has to offer. It is a wonderfully written and magnificently developed mystical ride, sure to enrapture reader's leaving them breathless and filled with anticipation. Gorgeously intense and realistically believable, The Raven Boys depicts a truly suspenseful tale sure to entertain. It is a tale that will tug at reader's heartstrings, with rich intensely vibrant and wonderful character's that come to life and leap off the pages.

Blue is the strong and sensible type of girl that reader's will be able to relate to, the most. She's likable in many ways, with a few realistic flaws of her own which makes it easier to connect with her more on a realistic level. She's done pretty well at dealing with growing up in a house that isn't anything less than unusual. Her mother and Calla, Maura, and Persephone are brillinatly colorful, bringing so much life to the pages in their own eccentric ways and personality flare. They add a lot of whimsical unusual fun to the story, enriching it in so many other details, aspects, and facets. Reader's will definitely find themselves enjoying these colorful kooky character's as they get to know them one by one.

The friendship between each one of the Raven Boys, is one of the best aspects of this wonderfully written and enjoyable novel. Each of them possesses their own painful backstory, that Maggie Stiefvater manages to gradually reveal over time. It's heartbreaking and beautiful, but it's such an amazingly touching story. These group of boys are incredibly complex and complicated to figure out at first, but once reader's get to know them along the way they will surely fall in love with each of them. Together, they each bring so much depth and layers to the story. I personally enjoyed how well compatible they were with one another, it made the story much more interesting and enjoyable.

Maggie Steifvater has managed to pen such a beautifully illustrated, deeply rich and intense, emotional story that is just as eloquent and almost lyrical at times. She never fails to set the stage or the mood, with whatever she is writing. Fans of her previous novels, will not be disappointed with The Raven Boys. It is an amazing start to what is soon to be another brilliant series on her behalf. She has truly outdone herself, by writing one of the most character driven novels full of dark beguiling beauty and intrigue.

The Raven Boys is a book that reader's will definitely not want to miss out on!

MAGGIE STIEFVATER

All of Maggie Stiefvater's life decisions have been based around her inability to be gainfully employed. Talking to yourself, staring into space, and coming to work in your pajamas are frowned upon when you're a waitress, calligraphy instructor, or technical editor (all of which she's tried), but are highly prized traits in novelists and artists. She's made her living as one or the other since she was 22. She now lives an eccentric life in the middle of nowhere, Virginia with her charmingly straight-laced husband, two kids, two neurotic dogs, and a 1973 Camaro named Loki.

Book Review: Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Cursed by Jennifer Armentrout
Published: September 18, 2012
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Age Demographic: YA Paranormal
Pages: 312

Dying sucks-- and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he's a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she's more than interested. There's just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out.

However, she's willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't? But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not have been an accident at all, she's not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

Dying Sucks!!! For real this time.

Jennifer Armentrout never fails to amaze me with her brilliancy in creating a vibrant world full of intriguing mystery and intelligently written world building skills woven into the very fabric of her stories. The imagery alone is astounding, as is the intense emotion that she packs into many of her wonderfully memorable characters. The integrity of the stories they have to tell are never compromised and are always blended in so flawlessly, that I usually find myself in awe of the world that she has created. For me, personally, getting the chance to read a book written by Jennifer Armentrout is almost like being in the presence of the Holy Grail, that is how incredibly talented I believe she is. That's why, when I was afforded the opportunity to read and review an advanced copy of Cursed, a brand new world that she has uniquely and originally created, I was more than a little ecstatic.

The world of Cursed may be vastly different from that of her Covenant Series, but it is just as imaginable and uniquely cultivated. It is a spirited story filled with intense intriguing emotion, mystery, and a thrilling dark macabre world. The character development is outstanding and her characters are richly complex and captivating in so many ways that make them interesting and likable. Some are easy to connect with, while others remain a bit of mystery, but that's the beauty in who they are and the story they have to tell. They possess hidden realistic flaws that make them exciting to read about and discover who they are, exactly.

Ember is a complex and complicated character that shines on the pages. I found her to be quite relatable on many levels, as she possesses a few flaws and quirks of her own. She's different than most characters that I've read about before, with her physical scars and death's touch. It definitely made her an interesting character to get to know. Her quick fire temper and her ability to be as resourceful as she is at times are the two things that I most identified with, as I was reading Cursed. Her intelligence, wit, and beautifully fragile and heartwarming relationship that she shares with her sister, Olivia, were incredibly charming and sweet as well. Ember is definitely a character that anyone would be lucky to have in their corner; I know that I'd love to have her in mine. She would make a pretty amazing friend and sidekick to pal around with.

Hayden, on the other hand, is a beautifully dark, mysterious, and complex character full of so much depth and layers that make him intriguing. Readers will definitely find themselves swooning over his handsome dark presence. The potentially dangerous vibe that Jennifer Armentrout cultivates, is used amazingly well and lends his character so much quality and appeal. He isn't unlikable or scary and I think that's the thing that makes him the most appealing to audiences, as well as intriguing. Cromwell is a different matter all together, though. He's what I would call, a bit of a conflicting character, of sorts. While I was curious and intrigued by his steely nature, another part of me felt a bit of a creepy vibe eminating from him where he was concerned. He came across as this mysterious smug individual that just didn't really sit well with me.

The relationship that slowly develops between Ember and Hayden over time was beautiful and incredibly touching. Armentrout did an amazing job of exploring such an honest and realistic romance shared between the two. It's beautifully illustrated and emotionally tangible, sweet, and tender in such a raw understated way that comes across in such as honest and relatable. These two are addictive and incredibly easy to fall in love with. Readers will find themselves rooting for the two of them, I have absolutely no doubts.

The twists and revelations, along with the mystery and intrigue help to create a wonderful enthralling story that is sure to captivate any reader. Cursed is a highly entertaining and richly dark compelling story that is bound to have anyone on the edge of their seat. This book will leave you breathless and anticipating more. Jennifer Armentrout doesn't disappoint! Cursed is such an exciting world to dive into and become absorbed in the pages and become wrapped up inside the character's and the stories they have to tell. It is incredibly un-put-downable!

Thoughts on Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft
By Jody Gehrman

Jody Gehrman has penned another young adult novel that is full of quirky suspense and humorous drama. She delivers another wonderfully unique and exciting read, sure to wow fans of the young adult paranormal genre. It is a fun captivating book that is full of intriguing drama and unexpected twists and turns that reader's will find interesting. The world she creates and the rich tone she sets through her brilliant imagery and prose, is a world full of dark magical forces and deeply hidden secrets that manifest themselves in sometimes terrifying ways. Her character's come beautifully developed in all shapes and fascets that lend depth and layer's to the interesting spin she puts on witchcraft and the Alchemix that she introduces.

Audrey is a fantastically brilliant heroine, who is likable in many ways. She's incredibbly protective when it comes to the people she cares about, especially her younger sister Meg. She has some wonderful realistic flaws and worries that any young girl would be able to connect with. Audrey isn't just any old witch, she comes full force with heightened super powers. She's an Alchemix and it makes things even more mysterious and intringuing. She has a lot thrown at her that she has to deal with and she does it in a pretty realistic way. Figuring out her powers, delaing with the strange dreams and hallucinations she's been having, and trying to figure out the secrets of her mother's past before it destroys everyone she loves is bound to take its toll on her at some point. One of her best qualities, though, is being able to handle diffcult situations when they arise.

Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft is essentinally a delightful entertaining read and a story rich with unexplainable things that go bump in the night. Gehrman has skillfully created a fun mystical overtone to this story, that is sure to take reader's on a magical journey they won't soon forget. The romance that develops between Audrey and Julian is white hot electric in every sense of the definition. Their attraction is palpable and sparks with intense energy sure to woo any reader. That and the action in the final page of the book, is definitely praise worthy. This is not a book to be taken lightly or dismissed as just merely amusing, it is actually a wonderfully written book with a story that has some incredible potential.

Discovering Witchcraft:
A Guide to Writing Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft
By Jody Gehrman

Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft took me seven years, off and on, to complete. I know that sounds horribly inefficient, but some books simply refuse to be rushed. Here are few quirky facts about my very long process:

1. When I started it seven years ago it had a completely different protagonist and wasn't even written for a Young Adult audience. I had this epiphany one day out of the blue: I realized it could work really well with a teen heroine. Audrey, a seventeen-year-old girl with magical powers, replaced Sarah, a depressed divorcee in her late twenties, and Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft was born.

2. All of my other books have been contemporary romance, realism, romantic comedies--that sort of thing. This is my first attempt at writing about anything paranormal, unless you count a number of botched attempts that never saw the light of day. I spent many months on a book about brain-sucking sea creatures, for instance. Yeah, probably better if that one stays in my sock drawer.

3. Confession time: Although Audrey's got amazing skills in the kitchen, I'm actually a wretched chef. Well, I have potential, but I often get distracted. I tend to let things burn while checking my email. My husband does most of the cooking in our house, but I do bake on occasion. When I'm feeling especially decadent I've been known to whip up a batch of dark chocolate espresso cookies; once you've eaten a few, you can do anything!
