Wishful Wednesday was inspired by Waiting on Wednesday and Desperately Wanting Wednesday by Breaking The Spine and Parajunkee.

Wishful Wesnesday is my own little version of "Waiting On Wednesday". Every two weeks or so, I'll pick a topic or genre and list a few upcoming books (or book) that I'm anticipating the release for. This week, that book is going to be Dirty Little Secret by the amazingly talented Jennifer Echols. I will read ANYTHING that she writes, I think my favorite so far has been Such A Rush. She is definitely on my auto-buy list, for sure! So, stay tuned into the blog, because there will be a review for another title by her (Going To Far), as well as an interview with Jennifer and giveaway coming to the blog June 20th (as part of my YA Crossover to NA event) that you don't want to miss out on! It's going to be super exciting and lots of fun.

Bailey wasn’t always a wild child and the black sheep of her family. She used to play fiddle and tour the music circuit with her sister, Julie, who sang and played guitar. That ended when country music execs swooped in and signed Julie to a solo deal. Never mind that Julie and Bailey were a duet, or that Bailey was their songwriter. The music scouts wanted only Julie, and their parents were content to sit by and let her fulfill her dreams while Bailey’s were hushed away.

Bailey has tried to numb the pain and disappointment over what could have been. And as Julie’s debut album is set to hit the charts, her parents get fed up with Bailey’s antics and ship her off to granddad’s house in Nashville. Playing fiddle in washed-up tribute groups at the mall, Bailey meets Sam, a handsome and oh-so-persuasive guitarist with his own band. He knows Bailey’s fiddle playing is just the thing his band needs to break into the industry. But this life has broken Bailey’s heart once before. She isn’t sure she’s ready to let Sam take her there again.

Author Interview & Giveaway: The Unloved by Jennifer Snyder

 photo SOULUNSUNGNEWADULTEVENT260_zpsee34dcc9.png

I loved everything about The Unloved by Jennifer Snyder. It was a five star read for me, because it was so real, emotional, and I just fell in love with the characters and the story they had to tell. The deep bond of friendship and trust that ran deep and wide between between Nick and Julie, absolutely made my heartache with joy and sadness for the situations they found themselves in. They were truly fortunate to have one another. It's just a gorgeous story of friendship, love, loss, heartache, and so much more. You guys definitely don't want to miss out on this one for sure. Which, is why I'm so excited to be interviewing Jennifer on the blog today and sharing a giveaway for an e-copy of The Unloved with you guys.

For those of you who might have missed out on yesterday's awesome interview with the incredible Angela Corbett and my WoW of the Week featuring Eternal Echoes
the next book in the Emblem of Eternity saga by Angela Corbett, click the two links above and they will take you right to both of the posts.

Sometimes the love our heart needs to heal can be found in the familiar eyes of a childhood friend...

Julie Porter learned the hard way that trust is something which must be earned and not something to be given out lightly, those who say they love you are those who hold the power to hurt you most, and best friends can help you survive anything—until they move away.

Nick Owen knows a thing or two about a hard life. At a young age Nick learned how to take a hit and to make lemonade out of the lemons life tossed his way. Returning home after nearly two years of being away, all Nick cares about now is protecting his mom from the abusive hands of his father and catching up with his best friend—the girl who lived across the street, the girl he can’t seem to stop thinking about.

Finally reunited after two years apart, Nick and Julie are about to learn that age does nothing to protect you from life’s trials and tribulations, heartache and loss, but maybe together they’ll find a way to survive.

A Fun & Insightful Chat With
Jennifer Snyder

I find myself craving more of the YA novels written by authors that are really pushing the envelope on what they can put in their books (those that are right on the cusp of being mature YA or even New Adult) without exactly crossing the line, is there a line that New Adult author's have to flesh out and adhere to as well? Or are they open to a great deal more and have a much more free reign on what they can and can't include in their novels than YA?

This is an interesting question. Personally, I don’t think there is a very distinctive line drawn when it comes to New Adult novels as there is with Young Adult. In my experience with writing Young Adult novels, I think there was always a hesitancy to take the storyline deeper or make it more gritty like I might have wanted to for certain areas. I’m not talking about just sexual situations either; I’m also talking about language, violence, and even emotions. There always seemed to be moments where I had to remind myself of the age of my characters and rein in certain things. In New Adult novels authors are allowed a little more freedom I think with expressing emotions, sexual situations, and even the situations we place our characters in during their day to day lives.

What inspired you to want to write for the New Adult genre, versus writing for either YA or Adult in general? Were there any authors or books that might have lured you into this genre?

For me, I think it was the ability to shed the fear that I always bore of crossing the invisible line when writing a novel that might make it come off as being too much for the Young Adult crowd. I’m also a twenty-something author, so the appeal to write for those in my own age group was motivating.

What do you think is the most challenging aspect of writing New Adult?

The same thing with every novel in ever genre out there...coming up with either a fresh take on a storyline or coming up with something uniquely original.

There have been some pretty disparaging remarks made recently in light of the New Adult genre, I've even heard it referred to as "YA with more sex" and I was wondering what your thoughts might be on pushing the limits of the stereotyping that New Adult has fallen prey to?

While there is the ability to write more sexually explicit scenes in the New Adult genre due to the age range of the main characters, I don’t think that is all these books have going for them. Not even by a long shot. There are also many situations readers of this specific age group can easily relate to—first real world jobs, moving out on their own, and college lifestyle just to name a few.

What would you consider to be your biggest strength in writing? Your weakest?

I’m going out on a limb here and saying writing emotions is my biggest strength. I really try to pull from life situations of my own to make sure the readers can ‘feel’ even a glimmer of the emotion I’m using. My weakest...being descriptive. As a reader I don’t enjoy when an author describes things overly, so as an author I tend to shy away from too much description in my novels. Sometimes this gets me in trouble with readers who prefer more description when reading, but that’s just how my stories come to me.

Some author's like to write in fist person pov, third, or dual pov's. Is there any particular writing style that you find, you either like or feel more comfortable writing in?

I really enjoy writing and reading dual POV novels. I feel as though you get the whole story. ;)

If you had to describe yourself in three words or less, what would those three words be?

Spiritual. Reserved. Passionate.

If you could only choose one book in the universe to attach yourself to, which book would it be and why?

Last year I read On the Island by Tracy Garvis-Graves. That book hands down is one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. The characters and storyline really stuck with me.

What was the most interesting thing you discovered while writing The Unloved?

How easily Nick’s voice and entire life came to me. He was stuck in my head in a big way while writing this novel!

Was it difficult to write for one character, than it was for another?

I don’t think so. I enjoyed writing them both!

What or whom inspired you to become a writer?

Growing up, I always had a love for books. To name one person who inspired me to become a writer or even a ‘what’ would be unfair. There were so many stories I read growing up, and even recently in my life, that helped to move me in this direction.

Is there a book or series that you would read over and over? What is it?

The Slammed Series by Colleen Hoover. Incredible reads! The amount of depth and emotion she puts into her characters is astounding.

What are some of your writer quirks or habits?

Post-it notes keep me organized. I have a rainbow of them attached to my desk as I’m typing this. I write my best work around 2:00 in the afternoon for some reason. I save my blurbs for dead last. Having a cover early on for a novel really provokes story ideas for me. I jot down dreams I feel could be scenes or even entire novels one day. I feel as though chocolate can sometimes be a great motivator to get chapters done!

Is there anything new, in the way of novels that you may have in the works?

At the time of answering these questions I’m hard at work on my New Adult Paranormal Romance series. The first novel is titled CATALYST. I’m also jotting down ideas for a New Adult Contemporary I’m hoping to release late 2013.

SOUL BLAST
EBook or Hardcopy/Paper? Both
Night or Day? Day
Chaotic or Organized? Organized
White or Dark Chocolate? White
Tea or Coffee? Tea

Dog or Cat? I’m gonna say cat, but I do have a dog. ;)
The Walking Dead or The Hunger Games? I’ve never seen The Walking Dead. Gasp, I know! So, Hunger Games.
Downton Abbey or Doctor Who? Never seen either!

If you had a spirit animal (can symbolize certain aspects or quality of your personality, skills, traits, or emotion), what do you think it would be and why?

Cat, because they’re independent and cuddly.

Is there anything else that you would like to mention?

Those were some amazing questions. Thank you so much for having me today it was a blast!

Jennifer Snyder lives in a small town nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina with her husband and two small children. Growing up, she was always an avid reader. Her mother spent way too much money on R. L. Stine and Christopher Pike books! Writing a novel of her own wasn't something she'd ever given much thought to. It seemed like an unobtainable, far-fetched dream. Then, in late 2007, she attempted to put pen to paper for the first time. What came out wasn't pure gold. And what came out next wasn't either. Things didn't work that way for her. She had to write and rewrite and learn more about her 'voice' as an author first. SHATTERED SOUL was her debut novel and no, you haven't seen the end of me yet....

Intriguing and heart-stopping powerful, Eternal Starling, is a beautiful written love story with a paranormal twist and a fresh new spin on reincarnation that will wow and captivate anyone. If you're craving a paranormal romance novel that has love and destiny written all over it, then this is the perfect book for you to sink into. There are thrilling twists and turns that you won't see coming. It's a fantastical story full of dark and dangerous things, that is sure to give you a thrill. Evie is an incredibly strong character, that isn't dependent or weak in any capacity. She's a definitely a breath of fresh air and an enjoyable character to get to know.

Angela Corbett's fresh re-take on soul mates is beautifully written and wonderfully fleshed out. She gives it a unique new spin, that makes it different, new, and exciting to read. It's full of sorching hot, and intense sexual chemistry that will leave you aching for more. The love triangle isn't overly done and blends in nicely with the flow of the rest of the story. Both Alex and Emil are wonderfully flawed and complex characters, definitely complicated as well. It's hard to tell who's right and wrong for Evie, because of the past that they each have tied with one another. Corbett does a great job of writing these two and the love they have for Evie in such a way, that there isn't a right or wrong choice where either of them are concerned.

Eternal Starling is definitely a love triangle done right!

Full of lost loves re-united with one another and fighting against darkness, it's a dark beguiling look into such a beautiful mythical world. Corbett does a magnificent job of developing the backstory of the Amaranthine and Daevos Resistance. It's an age-old battle between the Amaranthine Society the soul protectors and the Daevos Resistance the soul destroyers. Her writing style is highly addictive, laugh-out-loud funny, hilariously sarcastic, and witty. You will find yourself falling in love with the world she's created and the character's she's developed beautifully.

Eternal Starling offers reader's a glimpse at a new take on eternal love, which makes it even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this book to you, if you're looking for a New Adult paranormal romance that will take your emotions for a whirlwind ride and leave you hanging on the edge of your seat, in anticipation of the next new novel in this epic series.

A Lovely Interview With
Angela Corbett

When it comes to YA and Adult novels, I've noticed there are some who are what you would call "closeted YA readers" and there are some who just won't read Adult novels because they either feel intimidated by them or just aren't drawn to the appeal of them. What sort of appeal or draw to New Adult, would pull them into that genre and possibly give them the kind of story they are or may be craving?

I think New Adult novels will appeal to people because the genre offers a similar feeling of YA novels, but with a little more adult content. I really like New Adult because it focuses on characters age 18-25. I think that’s such an exciting time in a person’s life because so much change and life experience happens during those years. I love being able to explore those changes with my characters, and hopefully make a difference to people going through some of those same situations.

What inspired you to want to write for the New Adult genre, versus writing for either YA or Adult in general? Were there any authors or books that might have you lured you into this genre?

I actually write all three! But I definitely have books that need a New Adult setting, and Eternal Starling was one of them. My college years were one of the best times of my life. I was experiencing new things, learning what it was like to be on my own, and figuring out what kind of life I wanted to live. I wanted to watch my characters experience those things too. My main character in Eternal Starling, Evie, was always in college. There was no other way for me to tell the story and be true to where I wanted it to go. Even when agents told me I should change the setting to high school, I felt like I couldn’t. When I wrote Eternal Starling, New Adult actually didn’t even exist. I’m thrilled there’s a genre for it now though, because I definitely think it’s needed.

What is the most challenging aspect of writing New Adult?

Keeping up with current trends. I haven’t been 20 for a while.

What are your hopes for this wonderful New Adult genre, in terms of growing, evolving, and flourishing in the book marketing industry? What sub-genre would you like to see more of in terms of New adult books?

I hope it grows like crazy! I think it will. When the genre first came out it was a hard sell. Since then though, many NA books have been successful and the genre is becoming a lot more popular. It’s being more accepted at the bigger houses, and Indie authors are doing really well with NA titles. Even bigger authors are signing NA titles! Contemporary NA is really popular right now, and I’d love to see some NA mysteries/thrillers.

Are there any books or specific authors in the New Adult genre that you would like to recommend?

Colleen Hoover’s book, Slammed, and Victoria Smith’s, The Space Between. I’m also excited for the first book in Sophie Jordan’s new NA series, Foreplay.

If you could go back in time and tell the "young writer" in yourself anything, what would it be and why?

Read more, then edit, edit, edit. If you believe in yourself and your book, you can do anything.

What was the first book that you read, that inspired you to be a writer?

The Hobbit. My parents had a set of read-along children's books. I listened and tried to read along to The Hobbit every night—that’s how I learned to read. My dad used to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy to me before bed too. I'd go to sleep dreaming of hobbits, elves, orcs, and wizards. The Hobbit was the book that made me fall in love with reading and its ability to take me to new worlds...and made me want to make worlds of my own.

Was there any other career choice that you might have chosen to work in, if you weren't a writer? If so, what would it be?

I always thought Indiana Jones had an exciting life. I also work in marketing, but writing is what I love, and I’m lucky I get to do it!

I loved the way you introduced the Amaranthine Society (the soul protectors) and the Daevos Resistance (the soul destroyers). Where did you come up with the concept for this storyline and what made you decide to use Evie's lily birthmark as a connection to both?

When I first started writing Eternal Starling, I didn’t have an outline. I only knew that the book’s focus would be soul mates, and that Evie would have two soul mates. As I started outlining, I came up with the idea to have two competing groups, one that protected souls, and one that killed them. I chose the lily as I was developing the Trackers. The lily could be altered to look similar to a Celtic trinity knot and the meaning of the trinity knot (life, death, and rebirth) worked perfectly with my mythology.

Evie drives an awesome drool-worthy 1966 Mustang that most men would kill to have, what is the car of your dreams?

This might be the hardest question ever! I’ve always drooled over the McLaren, but I recently saw pics of the Lamborghini Veneno and I’m completely in love with it.

Since the relationship between Evie and Alex is based on their "being soulmates", do you believe everyone has one?

I do! I love the idea that there's a perfect person out there for everyone. But, there are a lot of different definitions and theories about soul mates. Evie will be exploring some of those ideas before the Emblem of Eternity of Eternity trilogy ends.

You've created some wonderfully vivid and amazingly colorful characters, were there any that you connected with the most? Who was the most fun to write? The most difficult?

Thank you! Evie was definitely the most fun to write. She’s the character I connect with the most because I see a lot of my 18-year-old self in her. Alex and Emil were the hardest, and they both changed quite a bit during the revision process. I’m really happy with where they are now, and I love where their stories are going…one of them especially.

If you could use one word powerful enough to describe the story that Eternal Starling has to tell, which word would it be and why?

Love. Eternal Starling is definitely a story about love, and how powerful that emotion can be.

You're stranded on a desert island and you can only pack three books in a carry on, which three books would they be and why?

Oh, man. This is SUPER hard, especially because I love reading books in a series…so we’ll assume all the books in a series have been combined into one big book.
  • The Fever Series, by Karen Marie Moning. I read it at least once a year.
  • One for the Money, by Janet Evanovich.
  • The Study Series, by Maria V. Snyder.

What would you consider to be your biggest strength in writing? Your weakest?

My biggest strength is dialogue. It usually comes pretty easily to me. My biggest weakness is definitely fight scenes. I hate writing them. I never know where all the arms and legs should go. Luckily, I don’t have that problem with kissing scenes.

How did it feel when you first realized that your book was going to be published? How did it feel afterwards?

I danced around the house with my Pomeranian for hours! He was very excited, but not for the same reason as me. I think there are levels of realization during the publishing process. Getting an offer is exciting, getting your first revisions is exciting and deflating, turning in your final draft is a huge relief, but nothing compares to getting your book in the mail and seeing it as an actual printed book that’s going to be for sale in bookstores. After the book was published, I was still excited, but the best thing about it is hearing from fans and knowing something I wrote affected them. Nothing is a greater compliment, and it means so much to me when a reader takes the time to email and tell me they liked my book. I keep every one of those emails and read them on days I’m feeling particularly crappy.

SOUL BLAST

EBook or Hardcopy/Paper? Hardcopy.
Night or Day? Night.
Chaotic or Organized? I used to be organized, but lately I feel like a tiny ball of chaos.
White or Dark Chocolate? Dark
Tea or Coffee? Coffee
Black, White, or Gray? Black
Dog or Cat? Dog
The Walking Dead or The Hunger Games? The Hunger Games!
Downton Abbey or Doctor Who? Downton Abbey! I was traumatized by an evil monster with red eyes on Dr. Who when I was 5. I still can’t listen to the theme song or watch the show.

If you had a spirit animal (can symbolize certain aspects or quality of your personality, skills, traits, or emotion), what do you think it would be and why?

I think my spirit animal would be a cheetah because they move fast and slow walkers/drivers are my biggest pet peeve.

Is there anything else that you would like to mention?

Thank you so much for having me as part of your NA event, and thanks to everyone for reading!

As a child, Angela Corbett’s most prized possession was a set of read-along books. She used to follow along with the narrator on the stereo and dream of when she would be able to read by herself. Her childhood reading habit led her to consider her future career. However, after consulting with her parents, she realized she had already exceeded hobbit height and since fairies and dragonslayers were tricky jobs to get, she decided she wanted to create worlds of her own. She started writing poetry in elementary school and worked as a journalist in high school and college, but could never leave her love for writing fiction behind.
She is a graduate of Westminster College where she double majored in communication and sociology. She has worked as a journalist, freelance writer, and director of communications and marketing. She loves classic cars, traveling, and escaping in a good book. She lives in Utah with her incredibly supportive husband and their five-pound Pomeranian, Pippin, whose following of fangirls could rival Justin Bieber's.
Eternal Starling is her debut novel and the first book in the Emblem of Eternity trilogy.
