Blog Tour & Book Review: Worlds of Ink and Shadow by Lena Coakley

Worlds of Ink and Shadow
Lena Coakley
Published: January 5, 2016
Publisher: Amulet Books
Pages: 352
Age Demographic: Young Adult

Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne. The Brontë siblings have always been inseparable. After all, nothing can bond four siblings quite like life in an isolated parsonage out on the moors. Their vivid imaginations lend them escape from their strict upbringing, actually transporting them into their created worlds: the glittering Verdopolis and the romantic and melancholy Gondal. But at what price? As Branwell begins to slip into madness and the sisters feel their real lives slipping away, they must weigh the cost of their powerful imaginations, even as their characters—the brooding Rogue and dashing Duke of Zamorna—refuse to let them go.

Gorgeously written and based on the Brontës’ juvenilia, Worlds of Ink & Shadow brings to life one of history’s most celebrated literary families.

Book Review

Worlds of Ink and Shadow, is one of the most originally gripping and compelling historical fantasy novels that I've read in a while. I was absolutely floored at how beautifully crafted the fantasy world was created, it was so incredibly stunning that it left me almost breathless. Lena Coakely never ceases to amaze me with her brilliant imaginative storytelling narrations and the sheer beauty of life that she breathes into her characters. My love for the Bronte sister's knows no bounds and to see how well she wove this story together, was such a wonderful note to end the year on. There's such a genuinely magical feel to this book, that I found the moments passing during the time I was reading it will likely not be forgotten any time soon. It will always have a special place in not only my heart, but on my bookshelf as well.

I feel very lucky and fortunate to have been able to read an advanced copy of this book, as it's just one of those books that becomes so meaningful and somehow starts to shape the way you feel about literature in general and the way you view the world and the people in it around you. I can't recall where I've read this before, but I almost feel certain that I've heard stories told about the Bronte siblings writing to escape the darkness of their own harsh realities they each had to face either together or on their own. Whispers of escaping into their own rich, dark, and intriguing fantasy worlds like Verdopolis (the very one that Lena Coakely explores in Worlds of Ink and Shadow) and other's such as, Gondal, Angria, etc. The depth of inspiration drawn from such dark realties and experiences from the lives of the Bronte siblings, is wonderfully compelling and such a magical part of why I love this book so much. Even though, it's still considered fiction, the way Coakley wove this gorgeous and breathtaking  tale together, pulled at my heartstrings in such a way that it will probably be one of my most memorable reads for a long time to come.

It was so amazing to see how Charlotte, Emily, Branwell, and Anne so easily crossed over between the worlds of reality and fantasy and immersed themselves into their own creations becoming different and sometimes better versions of themselves. It was just a richly beautiful and vastly different and unique world that was so creatively brought to life by Coakely in such a memorable and enjoyable way. She masterfully weaves the realities of their real world and creative fantasy lands together in such a way that it comes to life so big and so gorgeously on the pages. Dark and beguiling, Worlds of Ink and Shadow, encompasses a dark and deep outlook on their lives and illustrates their adventures and passion for writing in such a way that it ignites and comes to life so beautifully.

If you are looking for a book that possesses magic and creativity and you are fascinated by the Bronte siblings juvenilia then this is the book that will have you transfixed until the last page. I was absolutely transfixed from start to finish, captivated by this gorgeous book of fantasy tales and reality bent to desire.

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden comes an emotional new story about two troubled souls sharing one all-encompassing love...

The dark secret Kayden has kept hidden for years is finally out. Worse, he's facing charges for battery. The only way to clear his name is for Callie to speak up-something he'll never ask her to do. Instead, he'll do whatever he must to protect her . . . even if it means letting go of the only girl he's ever loved.

Callie knows Kayden is going back to his dark place and desperately wants to save him. But that means facing her greatest fear and admitting her own painful secrets aloud. The thought of breaking her silence terrifies her-but not as much as the thought of losing Kayden forever.

Deep in her heart, Callie knows the time has come for her and Kayden to forget the pain of the past. With the help of her friends Seth and Luke she makes a plan to show Kayden the life they could have. But can she convince him they can make a fresh start together-or is she already too late?

(Note: I received a copy of this book via the publisher, in exchange for an honest review which I have posted here on the blog and on Goodreads.)

My world has been consumed with anything written by Jessica Sorensen lately, specifically her Nova and Coincidence series. I cannot seem to get enough of them and I keep falling hard for each and every book that I devour. They are hard to read, messy, complicated, and filled with incredible emotionally intense stories and brilliant characters that shine on the pages. They have this way of consuming my life and filling my heart with so many emotions that it's crazy and yet, when it's over I still want more. I reach for the next book in the series that I'm currently devouring and I just sink into it, like it's an old long lost friend that I haven't seen in years.

"Hello, you! You're brilliant, let's have a read."

Jessica Sorensen has managed to rip my tattered heart into shreds once again with this novel. Callie and Kayden are even more broken almost beyond repair and yet the two of them manage to dig down to the deepest parts of who they are and pull out what small amount of strength and courage they have left to pull themselves through. The way these two connect with one another is undeniably beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Both are riddled with weakness that that threatens to ruin them in so many viscous ways, that it hurts to read about it. This book is their second chance, their redemption and hope for the love and the happiness they've been deprived of for way too long.

After finishing The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden, I was absolutely devastated and needed to read the next book in the series as quickly as I could get my hands on it. An absolute gorgeous and compelling story, it kept me transfixed to the pages and unable to stop reading until I had finished it straight through. Callie and Kayden have literally been through sheer hell and back and Redemption definitely did a wonderful job in focusing on letting go, being honest, and having the courage to tell the truth when telling the truth could possibly destroy everything you are and everything that you have left to hold onto for dear life. The darkness within these pages are almost emotionally crippling at times, but it is worth it in the end if you make it through. The pain and mental anguish that torments Kayden nearly knocked the breath out of me, I wanted to hug him because the pain and releasing it in such a way that it would leave him scarred physically for the rest of his life was such an enormously intense and difficult part of the story for me.

I could understand and sympathize with him, in all of the ways and times that he tried to push Callie away in order to protect her from the shit storm that his life had become. Even though it wasn't his choice to make for Callie, I enjoyed seeing how she fought with everything in her being to show him that she wouldn't just let him give up and push her away, that she would always be there with him and he could tell her anything. She's such a strong and brave woman, with so much pain of her own that she has to deal with. I was incredibly proud of her for having the courage to finally tell her parents what had happened to her all those years ago, when she was twelve years old on her birthday. I was beginning to wonder when that was going to happen or if it ever was and frankly, I was starting to get tired of the way her mother treated her as if she was betraying the family as well.

If she would have just stopped and really looked at her daughter, maybe even asked the question all those years ago, then maybe Callie wouldn't have gotten to the level of being so messed up and tormented in the first place. Her daughter was terrified and destroyed, withering away and crawling deep inside herself and she just let it happen without questioning why. This is the part of the story that I have the hardest time dealing with, because I just can't seem to fathom the idea of watching someone that close to you spiraling out of control like that and not acknowledging it or even questioning it. Instead, she hammered away at her, made Callie feel even more isolated and afraid to speak up.

The best thing about the Coincidence series for me, is how beautifully the character growth is for all of the characters in the novel. With each book, they become stronger, happier even if it's hard won, healthier, and courageous in their journey of letting go and embracing their lives as they are. If you're looking for a book that's going to make you feel so many intense emotions on overload, then this is the one that you want to pick up. It's beautifully messed up in all of the most complicated, messy, and fractured ways that broken characters can be.

(Note: I received a copy of this book via the publisher, in exchange for an honest review which I have posted here on the blog and on Goodreads.)

I fell in love with Jessica Sorensen's beautiful way of telling a story so emotionally charged and realistic, that it would leave you stunned and amazed back in March. From the moment that I sat down to read Breaking Nova, I absolutely fell head over toes in love with the whole series and couldn't put any of the books down until I had finished it entirely. The world she creates and the characters that she develops are gorgeously broken, incredibly strong, and emotionally intense that it is seriously breath taking. By the time that you are finished with this series, it will leave you dealing with all the feels. Fraking amazing and emotionally charged, Ruin Me will ruin you completely in all of the best ways possible. Beautifully written and incredibly intense, this gorgeous and compelling story will draw you in and captivate you.

It's not hard to fall in love with all of the characters in this series, but Ruin Me is a little different than the rest of the books. Both Jax and Clara have had a lot of emotional issues they've had to deal with and they definitely come from broken and painful backgrounds. Yet, the two of these find themselves gravitating towards one another. Jax is an amazing character, instead of letting his crappy past define the person he becomes, he takes an entirely different route in life. He becomes a protector of his sister Avery and his nephew, he's also just this really amazing charismatic guy that has a lot to offer any woman that he chooses to be with and at the moment he wants Clara. Clara, on the other hand, isn't interested in being more than a friend. She's terrified of getting close enough for him to see the truth, a truth that she's not really ready for anyone to find out.

Ruin Me, is such an emotionally driven book where you can see that both characters aren't addicts and neither are a victim of their circumstances either. It's inspiring in a lot of ways and just a really amazing novel, it can be read as a stand alone although I would recommend the entire series as a whole. If you're not one to want to read the whole series, then at least read Wreck Me, which is Jax's sisters Avery book where he plays a part in it and you get a lot more information on their background and the crappy existence they had to endure as young kids. One of the things that Jessica Sorensen did with this book is take a really huge negative and turn it into a wonderfully inspiring and positive love story that ended with happiness.

If you are looking for a series that's going to totally turn your feels upside down, then this is the series that you want to pick up.

Dark, haunted, and beautifully written Wreck Me is emotionally intense and aching in all of the right ways that will leave you breathless and yearning for more.

Jessica Sorensen pens a gorgeous and painfully tragic novel, that will move you in ways unimaginable. The gritty realism of secrets, drugs, alcohol, and physical abuse will gut you where it hurts most, but the darkness tempered against the light of hope will bring you back just as it did with Tristan and Avery.

These two broken souls will find each other in the darkness and will emerge on the other side together stronger than ever.

Tristan has always felt like a ghost. After a painful loss, he became all but invisible to his grieving family. So he dove headfirst into a dangerous life, sinking deeper until he felt he could disappear-and almost did. Though Tristan survived, staying on track is a 24/7 battle he’s not sure he wants to fight.

Then Tristan meets Avery, the girl with purple streaks in her hair and tattoos like secrets, waiting to be uncovered. Her smile is warm and inviting, but her sad, hazel eyes tell a different story. And the strangest part is-she can really see him. A girl like that might just keep Tristan out of the darkness . . . or pull him right back in.

(Note: I received a copy of this book via the publisher, in exchange for an honest review which I have posted here on the blog and on Goodreads.)

It's become apparent that Jessica Sorensen has the power in the sheer brilliance of storytelling, to wreck my emotions so incredibly with every book she writes in this stunning and gripping New Adult series. I love Tristan almost as much as I love Quinton, which is saying A LOT because holy hell QUINTON! That's all I have to say about that. And, I find myself really enjoying Avery's character just a little bit more than Nova, because even as damaged as she is I don't find her always putting her own mental health at risk to save someone. Yes, she carries around her own guilt that eats away at her, and she has her own set of flaws and emotional issues like the rest of the characters in this amazing series do, but there's something about her that makes me really enjoy reading her story and learning about the battle scars she carries around with her.

Tristan: Finding Hope, gives us a small glimpse at just how damaged and fucked up Tristan really is. It goes one step further in showing readers the origins of when and why Tristan started doing drugs to not only numb the pain that he felt, but to also draw attention to himself - any attention - whether it was good or bad because he felt so invisible in his own home that it was the only way that he could resort to making himself seen or heard by his parents. Constantly being compared and expected to live up to his sister Ryder's abilities, only continued to break him further. I wanted to reach into the book and hug him so hard, when his mother told him that she wished it was him that had died instead of Ryder and I was so angry with his father for not stepping up and taking more control of the situation, stopping the verbal abuse and vile hatred that spewed from his mother onto Tristan's shoulders. Her ability to take Ryder's death and use it to try and emotionally manipulate Tristan and his feelings, really enraged me.

I found myself wanting to fling this tiny book across the room on so many occasions, that it was unreal due to the horrid ways that his parents had treated him. This is a good thing, because I love it when a book can take my emotions and drag them from one extreme to the next and make me feel completely at a loss one second and then so hopeful in the next. Jessica Sorensen is amazing at doing this.

And, eventually I was so proud of Tristan for not blaming Quinton for his sister's death, for actually seeing what had happened for what it was, an accident that nearly wrecked Quinton's life in more ways than imaginable. As messed up and complicated as his life is, as much as he's dealing with battling his sobriety on a day to day basis, he is so much stronger than he gives himself credit for and he proves it in so many ways when he meets Avery for the first time. It's easy to see how she could have this profound affect on him, just by giving him the choices that she does in the following novel Wreck Me, which is the continuation of their story. She's just as damaged and broken as Tristan is, maybe even a little bit more given what she's had to endure during her young life and with the mistakes that she's made. Both strong and beautiful, she is undoubtedly guarded in so many ways that it's hard to get to know the "real" person she is behind the one she presents to the world.

Avery's past is dark, haunted, and full of so much violence that when her and Tristan meet, they have this instant connection where they each just get the other one without having to say too much about it. Tristan doesn't know what love is and Avery has completely sworn it off, because all it ever gave her was pain and deep emotional and physical scars that she'll never be able to leave behind her completely. Yet, together they are both the makings of a beautiful sorrow filled love story that can and will spark a glimmer of hope in each of their souls, once they figure out exactly what they want and what they deserve in life.

If you enjoyed the first two books in this series, then you will also enjoy this little insight into Tristan and why he is so fucked up and complicated. I would definitely recommend this to you, if you are a fan of gritty, reality based New Adult novels that are unafraid to go there with the ugly, messy, and complicated lessons of life.

(Note: I received a copy of this book via the publisher, in exchange for an honest review which I have posted here on the blog and on Goodreads.)

I am truly amazed with how brilliantly poignant and gorgeously compelling, Jessica Sorensen is able to realistically portray the open brokenness and painful lives of these beautiful characters that she so lovingly writes about in her Nova series. With every single book, including the novellas, I find myself becoming more and more entranced with these stories and wrapped up in these characters lives as if they are my own. They are stunningly gripping and full of misplaced trust, life altering situations, and the harsh realities of dealing with substance abuse, death, and both physical and emotional abuse at the hands of so many others that it's unreal. The Nova series has drug my emotions through the gamut and yet, I still keep coming back for more because I simply can't get enough. I absolutely love it, when a book is able to bring me to my knees, only to pull me up higher than anything else with just that one flicker of hope illuminating the darkness. It's a gorgeous and painful illustration of what life is like, in that messy, unguarded, and complicated way that it affects all of us on a day to day basis.

The happiness that Jessica Sorensen writes about within these novels and the way that she drags these stories out over a span of two to three books, is hard won, full of painful personal tragedy, and all the more real and sustainable in the end. They are simply more tangible than anything else I've read and it's so incredibly easy for me to just dive into the murky depths of these complicated books and dissect them from the inside out, because they are so freaking amazing. They've literally turned my reading world upside down and placed it on its head. I just can't seem to see my life without her writing or her books in it and that's say a great deal, because it takes A LOT to make me feel this way about any one particular author. There are only three and I can count them on all one hand, now Jessica Sorensen has taken up another slot on that list and I wouldn't have it any other way.

After seeing how Saving Quinton ended, I was excited to delve into Nova & Quinton: No Regrets, so see how Quinton was going to deal with living life sober, instead of continuing to numb himself to the tremendous pain and guilt he felt over the losses he suffered and constantly using drugs and aching for death to over-take him once more and get it right this time. His character didn't disappoint me in the least, if anything, he inspired me to want to never run away from or use any other life altering means to numb myself to the world, to life, or to anyone around me who could possibly care about me. He's broken, messy, and all over the place, but he is trying his best to hold on. It's not always a pretty picture, it never is where drug and verbal abuse and overwhelming guilt are concerned. He has his ups and downs, but through it all he manages to make the best of it and realizes in the end that what he wants, what he needs, is okay to have. It doesn't mean that he has to forget, but in order to fully heal and move forward with his life, he does need to let go of some of the things that he lets constantly hammer away at his heart.

Nova is a wonderful force in his life, she is there always and she never judges him. Though, I would argue, that her putting her own mental health on the line to always be there for him is definitely a bit more unhealthy than I'd like to see her. It's one of those things that I also love and dislike about her, but it works when it needs to and I can be okay with it to a point. She is just as fragile as he is and her heart and life has been shattered beyond almost recognition as well. She's managed to pull herself back from the brink of that over-powering darkness that threatened to take her down with it and now, all she wants to do is help to pull Quinton back from the ledge as well. She would do anything to make him see just how important he is, just how much he deserves to let himself be happy, and to let go of some of the guilt and pain that's weighing him down.

These two beautiful tortured souls have had their emotions and their lives put through the gamut and while it took A HELL OF A LOT to get them on their way to healing and letting go, to believing in that flickering little light of hope - they were finally able to embrace it and each other as well. Nova and Quinton are gorgeous and they tear my heart to little bitty bits and leave the pieces lying all over the floor in a scattered mess over and over again. And yet, I wouldn't change anything about these two for the world, because I've loved every single minute of their epic and emotionally painful yet healing inspired story.

I tip my hat to Jessica Sorensen and what she's been able to do with these characters and their story, but not just their story either. All of the characters stories. I loved more than anything how both Quinton and Nova were able to work through their issues and let down the walls so completely built up around them, by letting the other all the way in finally. This book put them each through so much hell while they were apart from one another and finding their way back to being fully let in, that it was unreal.

I'm glad that I was there to see it all happen the way that it did, because it was gorgeous to finally see Nova realizing that she can't always control the force of life and save everything. That sometimes, you have to just accept how things are and learn to deal with it without letting affect you mentally. My heart definitely ached for Tristan a little bit more, being so close to the woman he thought he was in love with, and then realizing that she was so completely wrapped up and in love with another totally different guy. I found myself wanting to see him find someone to love him for everything he is, without holding his past against, and to also find that little bit of strength and that flicker of hope buried deep inside of himself that I knew was always there waiting to be let out.

And, then I found myself incredibly sad for the loss of Delilah, even though I had seen it coming after having read and loved Delilah: The Making of Red. It was such an incredibly tragic glimpse into who she was, had been, and who she always wanted to be. There were things about her, that you just wouldn't know if you hadn't read it and it was heartbreaking to see her story end that way and yet, it made all the more sense to illustrate the harsh ugliness of the world around us and the choices that we make everyday. I think, in this one sense, Jessica Sorensen hit on something more powerful and real that even she could possibly imagine. Although, I don't presume to speak for her, it's just a feeling that I have.

This book broke me and put me back together in so many ways, that I can't begin to tell you how amazing this journey has been. If you're looking for a book or a series, that will share with you the harsh realities of this world and the decaying affect that drugs, abuse, and violence can have on your life - then this is the book/series that you want to read. All of the happy-ever-afters come with a price and they don't come easily. I think, this is what I love so much about them so much so, that I'm reminded of something another character that I loved with every big of my being said on a distant show that will forever remain a special part of my life.
