THE QUESTION OF THE WEEK

"Have you ever looked at book’s cover and thought, This is going to horrible? But, was instead pleasantly surprised? Show us the cover and tell us about the book."

Oh, wow! This isn't an easy question for me, because I actually have to think. At first glance, I would probably say that it would have to be The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. That's simply because I've never been the biggest fan of zombies or anything such as books, movies, etc. to do with them. Within the last year, that's sort of shifted a little bit as far as books go, as I've tried to reach out and push against the walls of my comfort zone. But, the cover and the synopsis of the book itself, at first glance just didn't immediately draw me in. I am planning at some point to read at least the first book in this series, if not the whole entire series because I've heard some pretty amazing things about it.

The Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr, is another good example of this. While the covers are absolutely gorgeous, breath-taking, and incredibly eye-catching I just wasn't necessarily feeling the whole "rich dark and compelling world of the fae." It seemed like it took me forever to get through the first book in the series, but once I got it read I found it much easier and enjoyable to read the next two books in the series. I have actually really enjoyed Ink Exchange the best, I think. I still need to read the next two books though and I think I will at some point, this year.

I can't really think of any other books off-hand, but I'm pretty sure there are some out there. I hate to be one of those types of people who judges a book by it's cover, but well you know what they say about "first impressions" and the cover of the book is the first thing you see before you read the inside flap or the back for the summary. So, it's kind of hard not to be a little cover judgemental, sometimes.

I think I answered this question backwards and all wrong. :/

  1. So many cover shares??  Great choices. :)  I like some of them and some of them are not that good!

  2. I understand what you mean. It's hard not to judge a book by it's cover because it's another way of seeing what the book is about. Everything about it is meant to hook you in.
The summary, the theme, the cover, and if one doesn't do that it's hard to be interested.
I'm a terrible person of judging a book by it's cover and the summary. I'm can be very picky about what I read.

OOh nice example with Wicked Lovely series! I love the covers too. I just got a little confused with the books in trying to connect the pieces together to make the series.

  6. Lol I'm glad you said at the end that you answered the question backwards because I was wondering what was going on!

    Happy Friday!

  7. Yeah, I think that I sort of answered this question backwards, but for me it wasn't so much the covers for one of the particular series - but the overall story itself until I actually got a little further into it.

Thanks, so much for stopping by the blog and following. Will be returning the favor. :)

  8. It actually got better after the first book, so I'm looking forward to reading the next two.

Thank you, so much for stopping by the blog and following. It's nice to see you around. Have a great weekend. :D :D :D

  9. Yeah, that was sort of the problem that I was having. It took me a year to read Wicked Lovely itself and it's never taken me that long to read a book. I was almost embarrassed, but I think it had more to do with the fact that I just didn't have my head in that particular world just yet. Once I got to Ink Exchange and Fragile Eternity it got a lot better and easier for me, I actually really enjoyed them and the world that Melissa Marr has created.

Thanks, so much for stopping by. I hope you have a super fantastic awesome weekend! I always love seeing you in the blog. :)

  10. Good counter point with the gorgeous covers and not so awesome story. I haven't had the opportunity to read either series, but like you, zombies are starting to take over my TBR list.

  11. I can be pretty pick about what I like to read sometimes, too. That's why I hate to admit, that the cover plays as much into that decision as it does. But, in honesty, it's the first thing that I see and usually part of what makes me pick it up, read the summary, and then decide whether or not I'd really enjoy it. So, on some level, the image is the first thing that's presented. Then the author's ability to tell a good story, comes next. I don't know if that's right or not, but it's sort of how I see it in a way.

  12. Oh, the books are fantastic, well the Wicked Lovely series, but I agree with you on some of the covers. lol.

Thanks, for stopping by the blog!

  13. Yeah, I think what it was, is that I just wasn't into the dark world of fantasy or the idea of zombies in general, so that's why it was like that for me. Now, though, since I've actually read the first three books in the Wicked Lovely series and liked the two that followed after the first one and I've heard so many great things about The Forest of Hands and Teeth I'm actually starting to re-think the boundaries that I have in what I'll read and what I won't. I'm a little more open. So, yes...zombies are okay in book form and I love the dark and richly compelling world of fantasy now.

Oh, I love your blog, so I'll always be stopping by here and there. :)

I kinda like Ryan's book covers but I don't know why. You're right about Wicked Lovely though, they're totally beautiful and I just couldn't get into the first book. I think I got about halfway before I had to give up. New follower here :)

  16. I agree with you about the covers to Wicked Lovely.  I think they are gorgeous but I would not necessarily say that they are about Fae based on the covers alone.

  17. I actually enjoyed the second and third books in the Wicked Lovely series and kind of can't wait to read more of it.

  18. It was so hard for me to get into the first book of the Wicked Lovely series. It took me a year to actually read it, which I thought was ridiculous. Not Melissa Marr or her writing style, mind you, but the fact that it took me a year. But, I think that was more to the point of my head just wasn't in it to read such a richly dark and compelling world full of fae at the time. Now, I don't even think anything of it, I just pick up the books and away I read like the wind. The series gets better by the second and third books, though. I can promise you that. :)

Thanks, so much for stopping by the blog.

  20. LOL Suz, that's okay -- I'm the same way with covers! x) As much as we're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, that's the thing that catches our eye first, y'know?  And I read The Forest of Hands and Teeth! :D It was unlike anything I'd ever read before, that's for sure -- I hope you like it when you get the chance to! <3 Plus, the Wicked Lovely covers have always been so beautiful! I adored the second book too because Leslie was awesome and I love tattoos! x)

I hope you have an amazing weekend, Suz! :) <3

The Forest of Hands and Teeth are ugly, and some of the Wicked Lovely series covers looks like a man dressed as a woman. Lol. Great choices, totally agree! I'm a New GFC follower btw. Happy reading.:)
