Cover Reveal for A Grimm Legacy (Grimm Memories #1) by Janna Jennings

TODAY WE'RE HAVING A
COVER REVEAL ON THE BLOG

I'm kind of super excited about this particular cover reveal, because it's for a fairytale retelling and it's also a book that I've been wanting to read and I finally added it to my Goodreads "tbr" list. I think the thing that has drawn me into this beguiling world of dark enchantments and whimsical characters, is that in Elorium the happily ever after's aren't guaranteed. I love it when there's a little more realism embroidered into the fairytales that are being retold these days, it somehow makes them more interesting and complex and less sugar and spice and everything all wrapped up in nice pretty little pink statin bows. I can't wait to dive headlong into the snappy battles with evil fairies and the giants, get swept up in the adventure, and unravel all the mysterious secrets the Elorium forest has to offer.

I WILL READ THIS BOOK THIS YEAR!

A Grimm Legacy (Grimm Memories #1)
By Janna Jennings

Patchwork Press
Young Adult Fairytale Retelling
Published October 29, 2013

Enchanted castles and charming princes thought to exist only in stories come to life in this classically twisted fairy tale that combines the timeless quality of generations old folktales with the challenges of the modern world.

The woods of Elorium appear ordinary to Andi Grace, until birds start talking and elves answer doors. Along with three others, Andi has been whisked out of her world and finds herself the reluctant guest of the perplexing millionaire, Mr. Jackson—a stranger willing to help get them home, but who’s keeping secrets of his own.

Discovering unexpected family connections to this fairy tale land, the group must rely on each other as they dodge evil fairies and battle giants, intent on keeping them in Elorium.

Faced with characters short on whimsy and bent towards treachery, Andi, Quinn, Fredrick and Dylan are forced into fairy tale roles to find the way home. But in Elorium, happily ever after is never guaranteed.

Cameron Jace: Wonderlander, Neverlander, Unicorn-chaser, enchanter, musician, survived a coma, & totally awesome. Sometimes I tell stories. Always luv the little monsters

I write young adult paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and science fiction mostly. The Grimm Diaries series is a seven book saga that deals with retellings of fairy tales from a young adult POV – it connects most of the fairy tales together and claims to be the truth about fairy tales.

I live in San Fransisco and seriously think circles are way cooler than triangles.

Book Review: Kill Me Softly

Kill Me Softly
by Andrew Fukuda
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Expected Publication: April 10, 2012
Pages: 336
Age Demographic: Young Adult
amazon | b&n

Mirabelle's past is shrouded in secrecy, from her parents' tragic deaths to her guardians' half-truths about why she can't return to her birthplace, Beau Rivage. Desperate to see the town, Mira runs away a week before her sixteenth birthday—and discovers a world she never could have imagined.

In Beau Rivage, nothing is what it seems—the strangely pale girl with a morbid interest in apples, the obnoxious playboy who's a beast to everyone he meets, and the chivalrous guy who has a thing for damsels in distress. Here, fairy tales come to life, curses are awakened, and ancient stories are played out again and again.

But fairy tales aren't pretty things, and they don't always end in happily ever after. Mira has a role to play, a fairy tale destiny to embrace or resist. As she struggles to take control of her fate, Mira is drawn into the lives of two brothers with fairy tale curses of their own . . . brothers who share a dark secret. And she'll find that love, just like fairy tales, can have sharp edges and hidden thorns.

❝My Thoughts❞

Kill Me Softly is a wonderfully romantic edgy Grimm-based novel, brimming with suspsense, passion, and hidden thorns. Sarah Cross pens a novel that has the magnificent ability to stand out on its own amongst the legions of fairytales and their retellings to date. Riddled with secrets and lies, half-truths covered in darkness, rich and compelling prose, and beautiful imagery Kill Me Softly is a tale beyond any other. The characters are entertaining and enchantingly interesting, the plot is well developed, and the mystery is enough to keep readers flipping the pages as fast as their fingers can fly. It's strange, but Sarah Cross does a good job of penning a host of fairytale re-tellings all combined into one book, with originality, creativity, style, and flare all its own.

The best thing about Grimms Fairytales is that there aren't always happily ever afters and wonderful pretty things. A rose is such a beautiful thing to look at, their fragrance appealing, but underneath all that green you'll find that you might be pricked by a thorn. It's such a deceptively beguiling little thing, but it can also wound. This is what makes Kill Me Softly so appealing, in the story that it has to tell. It's in the details of the fairytale destiny that Mirabelle has learned that she has to choose to accept or not to accept her destiny. Dark secrets are kept deeply hidden and locked away, two brothers lives cursed with fairy tales, while Mira struggles to either accept or embrace what fate has in store for her.

Sarah Cross prose is beautifully flawless and flows effortlessly. It will definitely draw readers in with its intoxicating beauty. The emotion and heart that she depicts while penning the romance contained within the pages of Kill Me Softly is breath taking and heart pounding. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of insta-love or triangles, but this was set-up brilliantly. The irony of the love triangle is that appeared to be somewhat haunted and a bit twisted, which made it much more easier to take and interesting to read about.

The characters are some of the most interesting and complex that I've read in a while, very unique and likable in their own ways. The story just seems to come alive on the pages and transports readers on an intriguing journey of their own. I would recommend this book for those who enjoy fairy tale retellings.

Book Review: Bewitching by Alex Flinn

BEWITCHING BY ALEX FLINNBewitching
by Alex Flinn
Publisher: HarperCollins Children's Books
Expected Publication: February 14, 2012
Pages: 352
Age Demographic: Young Adult

Kendra Hilferty, the witch who curses Kyle Kingsbury in Beastly, tells about her immortal existence-how she discovered she was a witch and the various ways she has used her powers to help people throughout the centuries. (Unfortunately her attempts have often backfired.)

As it turns out, Kendra has actually had a hand in "Hansel and Gretel," "The Princess and the Pea," and "The Little Mermaid"-but these are not the fairy tales you think you know! Kendra's reminiscences are wrapped around a real-time version of "Cinderella," except the "ugly" stepsister is the good guy.

With dark twists, hilarious turns, and unexpected endings, Bewitching is a contemporary read for fairy-tale lovers, fantasy fans, and anyone looking for more Alex Flinn.

* Summary taken from Goodreads.

❝My Thoughts❞

Bewitching is a wonderful enchanting fairytale retelling depicting a few of the classics. It's filled with intense vibrancy, powerful emotions, and an intriguing take on a present modern day retelling of Cinderella that sets it apart from most fairytale retellings giving it an interesting modern edge. It is the story of Kendra Hilferty, a witch readers are introduced to in Beastly, who chooses to use her powers over the centuries for good as a way of helping other's but sometimes her attempts have a way of backfiring on her causing more harm than good. The most intriguing thing about this book, is that most of the fairytales are wrapped around a "real Cinderella" retelling that is presently occurring. It's interesting, because in this particular depiction the "ugly stepsister and stepmother" are the "good guys."

Kendra is a wonderfully developed character who comes into herself throughout the story and over the centuries. Her voice is incredibly strong and throughout the centuries, she has had the best of intentions for her use of her powers, which makes her even more likable. The irony in this beautifully flawed and perfectly written character, is that she isn't human at all and yet she comes across as more human than some of the other characters introduced along the way. Flinn takes such great care in blending a wonderfully balanced contemporary retelling of such beloved fairytales, while giving it the perfect amount of paranormal and rich underlying themes of humanity throughout.

Flinn's writing style is delightful and the story she tells is deliciously fast-paced. Her modernized spin on these classic stories give them a certain quality and edge that will have readers believing in them all over again. She writes with such lyrical whimsy that it almost seems as if she herself, possesses magical powers enough to transport her readers back to their childhood. The whole cast of characters in this novel are wonderfully flawed and developed exceptionally well. The plot is engaging and the stories are moving.

Bewitching is a dark alluring story full of amazing twists and turns, wonderful comedic timing, and delicious unexpected endings that are beautifully woven into the fabric of humanity. Flinn has written a powerfully lyrical and wonderfully whimsical take on fairytales sure to keep readers flipping the pages and revisiting their childhood again and again. It is the perfect blend of childhood fantasy with just the right tinge of paranormal.

Bewitching is an enchanting tale that readers will enjoy for a lifetime. I would recommend this to fantasy lovers and those who enjoy reliving brilliant fairytales from their past. This is a masterfully written epic novel chalk full of powerful emotion, epic adventure, and delightful stories of love and magic that will warm the heart and remind readers of the greatest lesson of all: humanity. Kindness to those less fortunate than you.
