Book Blitz&Giveaway: The Midnight Sea (Fourth Element #1) by Kat Ross

So, how much do we all love a fantastically well written and three dimensional villain that's written into a story in such a way, that you fall mad and passionately in love with their character and you know you're supposed to hate them, but you kind of don't want to?!

Seriously, my hand would be the very first to shoot straight up, because I do! I do! I so do!

I don't know if it's my love for all things Joss Whedon (and let's just all recognize that he has written some wonderfully loved and hated to love characters/villains), Stephen King and the crazy evil that he writes about, or the whole idea that some human's are pretty much demons masquerading with human faces and some demons are way more human than any other human could possibly be. All I know, is that I love, love, love these characters to pieces and they are some of my absolute favorite.

Give me an amazingly well established villain with a great backstory and plot twist waiting to happen, combined with fantasy and I'm there every single time because that is THE STORY that I want to read. This is why I'm so excited to have Kat Ross on the blog today talking about how to write a great villain, among a few other things. Plus, I'm just really excited for The Midnight Sea, and can't wait to read it. It just looks like it's going be a fantastic novel, from the synopsis and reading what the author has to say about it herself.

Want to know more about this awesome book?! Check out the synopsis below and order yourself a copy!

The Midnight Sea
Kat Ross
(Fourth Element #1)
Published: May 10th 2016
Age Demographic: YA

Genre: Fantasy
To Buy: Amazon
They are the light against the darkness. The steel against the necromancy of the Druj. And they use demons to hunt demons….

Nazafareen lives for revenge. A girl of the isolated Four-Legs Clan, all she knows about the King’s elite Water Dogs is that they bind wicked creatures called daevas to protect the empire from the Undead. But when scouts arrive to recruit young people with the gift, she leaps at the chance to join their ranks. To hunt the monsters that killed her sister.

Scarred by grief, she’s willing to pay any price, even if it requires linking with a daeva named Darius. Human in body, he’s possessed of a terrifying power, one that Nazafareen controls. But the golden cuffs that join them have an unwanted side effect. Each experiences the other’s emotions, and human and daeva start to grow dangerously close.

As they pursue a deadly foe across the arid waste of the Great Salt Plain to the glittering capital of Persepolae, unearthing the secrets of Darius’s past along the way, Nazafareen is forced to question his slavery—and her own loyalty to the empire. But with an ancient evil stirring in the north, and a young conqueror sweeping in from the west, the fate of an entire civilization may be at stake…
Despicable You:
Writing Great Villains

I have a confession to make—one that some of you might share. My favorite characters are usually the awful ones. The ones who do terrible things without a shred of remorse. The ones that I'm dying to see get their comeuppance, but not before they push our beloved protagonist to the very edge and nearly destroy everything in the story we care about. Yes, I'm talking about the villains.

Think the viscerally creepy Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar from Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. The icily elegant Mrs. Coulter from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Elizabeth Wein's SS-Hauptsturmführer von Linden in Code Name Verity, who we only meet second-hand but is terrifying nonetheless.

Villains can make or break a book. When they're boring or one-dimensional or clichéd, there's no tension and the plot deflates with that sad wheezing noise balloons make when you stick with them with a hatpin. But when they're done right, meaning that they are an actual character and not simply a clunky device to test the hero, they help keep the stakes of the story high and the reader turning pages late into the night.

In The Midnight Sea, King Artaxeros II is the obvious villain, but he's also a bit abstract—you don't meet him until more than halfway through, and then only briefly. So I needed another antagonist. One who you really get to know. One who has some admirable traits but, as the pressures of the plot slowly pile up, becomes something much darker. Without giving away too many spoilers, I'll just say that I spent as much or more time thinking about him as about my main characters, Nazafareen and Darius. If you're going to have a colossal betrayal, the reader had better care about everyone involved or it just won't have much emotional impact.

"So here are a few tips on writing unforgettable villains."

First off, all this is very subjective. What gives me cold sweats might make you laugh yourself silly. So you might start by thinking about which villains in film, TV, books, wherever, have resonated the most and why. Is it the prosthetic hook? The creepy Malkovich-esque voice? The mask of sanity they wear with their family when they're not committing grisly deeds? Once you know what disturbs you in the deepest, most primal part of your monkey brain, channel that quality in your own bad guy.

Okay, this one I cannot emphasize enough: give the villain motivation that readers can relate to, even if it's totally twisted. So they're power-hungry. Why? Is it because they have a secret crush on someone they want to impress? Or maybe they're compensating for a horrible childhood, or their dog needs an expensive operation, or their ideas of right and wrong are simply skewed beyond repair? I like to think that even the worst villain has something they care about. Balthazar, a necromancer who gets a starring turn in the second book of my series, is madly in love with his wicked queen. Yes, he does terrible things. But everything he does, he does for her.

Rachel Aaron has an awesome blog post on character development where she breaks it down into the deceptively simple formula below. The key is to understand that what a character wants and why they want it are two separate things and as a writer, you need to be very clear on both.

What do you want? (Goal)
Why do you want it? (Motivation)
What's stopping you? (Conflict)

If you have trouble, you can also try flipping the story and imagining it from the villain's point of view. You might be surprised at what you discover. Setting aside hockey-masked killers and comic book arch-bad guys, a good villain could potentially be the protagonist if he or she weren't quite so extreme.

In my first book, the sci-fi thriller Some Fine Day, one of the most despicable characters is a military doctor who's deliberately infected innocent people with a super-nasty Level Four virus. But as she calmly explains to the main character, the project is simply a response to their enemies engineering a similar plague. From her point of view, it's a matter of self-defense.

Effective villains often embody an exaggerated version of the same things your hero is conflicted about. That's very much the case in The Midnight Sea, where both Nazafareen and her antagonist face a similar choice but react in opposite ways. This is where we dig down deep and see what our characters are made of. Often, it is the villain's inability to change and grow and face the truth (external or internal) that proves to be their undoing.

So now that you’ve got a fantastic, fully fleshed out villain that rivals Moriarty or Lecter, what's the best way to get them across to the reader? Well, if the story is third person, you can give your villain their own POV. Jack Torrance in The Shining is one of my all-time favorites because we get to watch him slide slowly into madness over the course of several hundred pages. But the scariest part comes just before he's lost it completely. We know he's probably going to do some very bad things, but there's still an unpredictable quality to him. In our hearts, we still vainly hope that his love for his wife and kid will somehow triumph over the evil ghosts running the Overlook Hotel, which makes it SO much worse when Jack finally, irretrievably snaps.

As King says, “This inhuman place makes human monsters.” And those are always the scariest kind.

Anyway, thanks for reading! For tons more on villains, I highly recommend Bullies, Bastards And Bitches: How To Write The Bad Guys Of Fiction by Jessica Morrell.

14 Things I’ve discovered on the road to becoming a self-published author
© Caroline Batten 2015

I’ve been writing since I first read a Sweet Valley High book and thought I could do better myself. Of course I couldn’t at the time, I was nine but over the years the years, I’ve also learned a few things.

Please note, these are my experiences and may not be typical – in fact, they may be as far from typical as appears feasible whilst still sitting somewhere within the realm of possible...

1. If you look at self-publishing as a hobby, it’s cheaper than horse-riding, diamond mining or going to the movies once a month.
2. A brilliant book does not mean you’ll bag an agent/six-figure publishing deal. A brilliant book, kick-ass cover, slick editing, and selling a hundred thousand Kindle editions might.
3. Submitting to agents is a form of self-flagellation. Horsehair shirts cost less and are emotionally less devastating. (Plus you can write about the experience later, publish that book on Kindle, give it BDSM tags and sell more copies than you would the dystopian YA thriller you were originally touting to agents.)
4. Having a blog is great - random strangers DO read your witterings. Some of them even buy your book.
5. Signing up for authonomy.com does not guarantee you’ll be noticed by an agent the next day. It’s a website where you can learn key marketing skills such as, I’ll read your book if you read mine. Promise this one million times and you might hit the Editors Desk - this never leads to publication. Ever.
6. Signing up for animoto.com does mean you can make your very own book trailer.
7. Getting your first book professionally edited is a really good idea even if you’re not looking to self-publish. An editor will focus your style on the market/genre you’re really writing for, point out where your writing skills need work and you could end up with a manuscript an agent does want to read.
8. Grammar and punctuation are not dark arts – they’re a skill every author can and ought to learn;
9. Signing up for youwriteon.com does not guarantee you’ll be noticed by an agent the next day. It’s a website where you’ll receive reviews such as , ‘I hate chick lit and this shoe-based romance...’ and ‘I normally prefer steampunk erotica so this western romance...’
10. Some people do make it big - with very little effort it can seem.
11. Some people plug away for years and make pocket money.
12. That book you finished - it isn’t finished. Typing ‘The End’ simply means the editing can start.
13. Right now, on Amazon you can buy a book called Mail Order Tiger Bride Wars – it does what it says on the tin. That BBW shape-shifter piece of romance is currently ranked higher than #FORFEIT. Yet that doesn’t sting nearly as much an agent rejection letter because....
14. Three million reads on wattpad.com say people really like my books.

And that’ll do, pig.

5 Things You Don’t Know about Sebastian and Valencia
from the Thorn and the Sinking Stone
Written by CJ Dushinski

Sebastian

1) He has a cousin named Avery who has been adopted by his uncle Corduroy. The two boys are the same age and grew up learning the ins and outs of being a Dagger together. Sebastian and I both hope to see Avery make an appearance later in the series, because we both think our readers would love him very much.
2) Sebastian was incredibly close with his mother. She taught him to dance, and cook, and even sing a little. Though, since her passing, he avoids everything that reminds him of her…until he meets Valencia that is.
3) He has a tattoo of two crossing daggers on his forearm, just like every member of the gang to reach maturity. It was “gifted” to him by his father on his 15th birthday.
4) Sebastian graduated from high school the year earlier, albeit barely.

Valencia

1) Though the katana is her prized weapon, Valencia is a talented martial artist overall and can whip your butt with a pair of nun chucks.
2) She likes to paint in the traditional Japanese style.
3) She is devout in her worship of Shinto.
4) Valencia once had a childhood friend named Micah– brother to Aston Mori. He died tragically when she was seven, the same year she met Sebastian Leold for the first time.
5) Valencia is incredibly intelligent and was homeschooled. Because she spent so much time alone, she had ample opportunity to read and study and teach herself new things.

Excerpt from BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN – “Initial Glimpse”:
The hottie sat down and reclined, stretching out his arms on the back of the bench. He crossed his legs in the dude-esque, one ankle-over-the-opposite-thigh leg cross, and I caught a glimpse of his black motorcycle boots. The skin on his face was fair and smooth, and only his strong, square jaw saved his features from femininity. Gorgeous—a ten on a scale of Abercrombie model hotness. Tall, too, with dark blond hair and amazing emerald eyes.He turned his head, his gaze capturing mine. My face flamed, interrupting my ogling. His eyes widened, then narrowed. Once those hypnotic eyes seized mine, the atmosphere shifted and, for a moment, my heart ceased to beat. The intensity of his stare seemed to quiet all the thoughts and emotions whirling around inside my head. The lingering anxiety from this morning vanished.

After who knows how long, he slowly, almost reluctantly, turned away. He kept his head down like he had something to hide. Something he didn’t want people to see. Something he didn’t want me to see.I stared at his profile. Why had his attitude changed when he caught me gawking at him? Did he think, without even talking to me, that he was so far out of my league that we weren’t even playing the same game? Or worse…had he already heard the rumors surrounding my family?“Who’s the guy?” I whispered to Ariana, jerking at the sleeve of my sweater to make sure my scarred forearm remained covered. The skin tingled and burned again.Ariana snickered. “The hottie with the green eyes is Trent Donovan. Fallen Oaks’s newest bad boy.”
Excerpt from BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN – “Meet the Kitten”:
“Ah, poor baby. Are you hungry?” I asked, and the kitten loudly meowed. “Can we feed her?” I glanced at Trent with a pouty expression. “Please?”He shook his head, throwing up his hands. “Sure. There’s milk in the kitchen. I’ll be right back.”Trent returned with a bowl of milk and set it on the floor. I lowered the cat and she greedily lapped up the milk.
“She’s cute,” Trent said.
The ball of fluff raised her head, licking white drops off her mouth.“What should we name her?” I hoisted the kitten and cuddled her in my arms.
Trent wrapped one arm around me and scratched under the kitten’s white chin. “How about Charm?”
My heart skipped a beat and I melted into the crook of his arm. “It’s perfect.”
He rubbed the cat behind her ears. “I’d rather have a dog,” he teased.I covered the cat’s pointy ears with my hands. “Shhh, Charm will hear you.”
Trent grinned, then took the kitten from my arms and surprised me by kissing Charm’s head. He set her on the floor and grasped my hand…

Excerpt from BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN – “A Kiss”:
His hands gripped my shoulders and he yanked me against him, his mouth covering mine in a deep kiss. The caress of his lips was softer than I’d imagined. An unfamiliar rush of yearning engulfed my senses. My hands wrapped around his neck, fingering his silky hair. His firm lips seared a path along my neck, igniting a blaze of desire that flooded my skin everywhere they lingered. My heart pounded. Then his mouth found mine and my whole body tingled. He touched my face softly with his fingertips, holding me in place. My own fingers caressed his face, his neck, grasped onto his shoulders. My nails dug into his shirt as I kissed him back. I was overcome with heat and yearning. I pressed myself closer to him, knowing all the while that we could be caught at any moment by his uncle, but I didn’t care.Boys had kissed me before, but not like this. Never like this…

Thank you so much for letting me chat up my YA series with all of you. It’s been an honor to share my favorite moments from the first two books in the Spellbound series. If you haven’t seized your copy of BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN yet, please do so. Epic thrills, spooky adventures, and passionate romance await you! I hope everyone enjoyed this post, now go feed your mind and read a book! Preferably one of mine.

Blog Tour Post featuring Top 5 Halloween Reads + Giveaway by Jeyn Roberts

Halloween is definitely one of my favorite times of the year to celebrate, because it's the one time of the year where you can be anything that you want to be and nobody judges you for it. Plus, you get all the good candy to snack on for the rest of the year. (If it lasts that long, lol.) For me, I either like to hang out at my mom's handing out candy to the kiddo's or at my sister's doing the same because it's so much fun and because I love hanging out with the family and have fun times. Then I like to come home, make a hot cup of pumpkin spice coffee and curl up with a great book and nibble on the candy that I nicked from the bowl. Haha.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do this year on the blog for Halloween and then it hit me, "favorite books to read during Halloween" and since this is a book blog I felt like it was highly appropriate for me to ask Jeyn Roberts author of The Bodies We Wear to share her Top 5 Favorite Halloween Reads with us and boy what a creepy list it is. lol. The Bodies We Wear is an alternatively dark and gritty look at life and death, intermingled with street gangs and drugs. From what I gather, it's a highly suspenseful and terrifyingly realistic portrayal of the gritty underbelly that goes on in America's society. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the copy of this that I have on my Kindle, it just recently released in September and from the ratings I've seen on Goodreads, it looks like it's pretty intense and gripping with a mixed bag of opinions.

I'm lucky enough to be part of a blog tour running from October 1st to the 31st, which is the last stop on the list. So, I'll be sharing Jeyn's Top 5 Halloween Reads along with a giveaway for two beautiful finished copies of The Bodies We Wear to two different winners. The giveaway is only US/Canada only. So, definitely check that out below and fill out the Rafflecopter for a chance to win. You never know, you could be the one ending up with the treat. :)

So, I'm curious as to what you're going to be reading this Halloween?

I'm going to try and finish up my ARC of The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon and start reading The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters (I'm really excited about this one, because it actually takes place on Halloween in the 19oo's and looks like it's going to be so good.) I think if I remember correctly it's about ghosts and mediums, that sort of thing and it's definitely historical so big yay there!
