Book Excerpt

“This is simple. Decker, you lead. When he steps forward, Summer you step back.”

They stumbled through the first few steps, with Decker mumbling apologies as he stepped on her toes. Summer’s body felt like it was on fire. Her breathing sounded too loud in her ears.

“Step back, Summer,” Jessie said again. “Let Decker lead!”

Decker smashed her toes, and she stumbled. He caught her as she crashed into him.

“Careful, Decker!” Jessie called.

Summer looked up, instantly caught in Decker’s gaze. His grip stayed around her, pressing their bodies together. As if something clicked, she sensed his next move before he made it. She stepped back with her right foot as he stepped forward with his left. They made it through another step, then another. Their moves grew faster as they began keeping up with the music.

“Excellent!” Jessie exclaimed. “Now you’ve found the rhythm. One, two, three. One, two, three.”

Summer couldn’t look away from him. Their bodies moved as if they belonged together. Decker’s warmth and magick made her feel like her insides were shaking. Jessie’s voice broke through Summer’s trance.

“Sorry, guys, but I can’t find any of my other music. I’ll download some for tomorrow. You want to come back in the morning, after your class, Summer?”

Summer broke eye contact with Decker. Immediately, they fell out of sync and stumbled. He released her and stepped away.

“Sure,” she managed.

“You, too, Decker. You guys are naturals together.”

Summer flushed and turned away, avoiding Decker’s gaze. She’d felt it, too, the instant connection that went too deep to be normal.

“Thanks, Jessie,” Summer said and hurried out of the room. She ran once she entered the hallway and sprinted up the stairs to her room.

Her hands shook. Her heart felt like it was doing cartwheels in her chest. She’d never felt this way for any guy, even Beck.

Decker was off limits. He was aligned to the Dark. She wouldn’t—couldn’t—be falling for him! Yet their connection was unlike anything she’d ever felt. In his arms, she hadn’t been alone.

Breaking Lauren Blog Tour featuring Author Interview and Giveaway with Jordan Deen

Breaking Lauren by Jordan Deen
Published: May 24, 2012
Publisher: Black Rose Writing
Age Demographic: YA Contemporary
Pages: 234

Seventeen-year-old Danny Cummings' life is far from a fairytale, but that's okay since he doesn't believe in happy endings. After spending a year in juvenile hall for maliciously beating his sister's boyfriend, Danny embraces his badass image. Spending most nights drinking, fighting and collecting gambling debts for his Uncle, Danny's life is out of control. His addiction to the bad boy lifestyle won't let him do anything about it, even with his family begging him to go straight. But, when fifteen-year-old Lauren McIntosh stumbles into one of his nightly escapades, the self-proclaimed anti-romantic can't concentrate on anything except Lauren and the fact that she's on the same path his sister was on. Danny knows true love happening for the villain is as common as gamblers paying their debt on time, but he's never backed away from a challenge before and he hates the idea that history will repeat itself.

Growing old with the man she loves—in the small town where she was born—is the only dream Lauren McIntosh has ever had; that is until her family is practically run out of town amidst rumors of arson and adultery. So, when she meets Danny at her new school and hears the rumors about his activities from her new friends, she wants nothing to do with him or the gossip that seems to follow Danny everywhere. After a dangerous and ill-fated attempt at sneaking out, she develops unwelcomed feelings for Danny that he seems to reciprocate. But, Danny’s unrelenting pursuit makes Lauren nervous, especially since he's the only one that wants to know the secrets surrounding her family’s move. Lauren can't tell if Danny's intentions are true or if he has other plans for their newfound and unlikely friendship. The only way to figure out is to let him in and that could destroy everything, including the popularity and social acceptance she desperately seeks.

Author Interview featuring
Jordan Deen

BREAKING LAUREN is your first New Adult book. What makes this book stand apart from your YA work?

First, thank you so much for hosting the BREAKING LAUREN book tour! BREAKING LAUREN is technically a cross-over novel. It was written with the desire to showcase things that are really happening in high schools, but I wanted to amplify the subjects to the point that the reader really becomes emotionally involved. I am known for my paranormal novels, and with BREAKING LAUREN, I wanted to push the envelope and explore my own range as a storyteller.

What was the most difficult part in writing this story?

The hardest part was how much I felt for the characters. Seeing their story unfold in my head and then turning it off when I needed to was the worst! I found myself writing out scenes in the middle of the night because the characters wouldn’t stop.

What was the most fun?

Honestly, I loved writing the tension and interaction between the characters. Danny and Lauren are so similar, but have completely different views on the world. Both are skeptical and pessimistic about certain things and totally different on others; it makes their relationship quiet entertaining.

What is your favorite scene in the book?

My favorite scene, by far, is the first kiss between Danny and Lauren. I won’t give away any spoilers—but it’s great to see both characters acceptance and denial collide.

Is there anything you would like readers to take away after reading the book they may miss that you want to point out?

Many people have commented on the ending of the novel, and I’m sure that will continue. However, this book is about growth, acceptance, self-discovery, and debunking myths that our families impose on us. It’s important for me that the reader connects to either Danny’s decisions or Lauren’s decisions.

You’ve recently been very busy moving, but writing wise, what is next for you?

I’m thankful to finally be in the home that I feel I’ll watch my son go to prom and graduate high school in. (FINGERS FIRMLY CROSSED because he’s 7). J We all have dreams, right? Writing wise, I am finishing up FULL MOON - the final in THE CRESCENT series. I am also editing the sequel to BREAKING LAUREN, working title: LOSING LAUREN. I’m always working on at least three projects, so I also have a super secret project going on that I will be posting teasers on my website shortly.

Madly James is thoroughly enjoying her internship in the small town of Slumber when the unthinkable happens—there’s a prison break in Atlas, the magically-protected home of Madly’s race. In order to save her home, the lives of her family, and all of humanity, Madly must learn to wield her exceptional powers and recapture the Lore before it’s too late and all is lost. But Madly’s only help are her two best friends and the Sentinel, Jackson Hamilton, that threatens both her heart and her destiny. Madly has loved Jackson as long as she can remember, but he is the one thing even a princess can’t have. Can she resist love to become the queen she was fated to be? Or can she find a way to have both?

This novelette introduces you to Madly and prepares you for the quest of a lifetime.

Anne once again leaves behind her ordinary life in MADLY & WOLFHARDT Madly James is thoroughly enjoying her internship in the small town of Slumber when the unthinkable happens—there’s a prison break in Atlas, the magically-protected home of Madly’s race. A traitor has set free eight Lore, the spirits of what humans know as fairy tales, and they are making their way to Slumber to awaken their descendants.

The first spirit to arrive is that of Ulrich Wolfhardt, a man that was once obsessed with wolves and a young maiden he would follow through the woods. After a bite from a wolf, Wolfhardt’s obsession with the girl became an unnatural hunger and the young maiden’s grandmother cursed him with a fate worse than death. And now he’s back…with a vengeance and a bite that can infect others as well.

Madly must learn the identity of Wolfhardt’s descendant and stop him before he kills again and spreads his curse across the earth. But the only person strong enough to help Madly is Jackson, the Sentinel who vowed to protect her and the one person capable of breaking her heart. Can Madly resist forbidden love long enough to save the world from Wolfhardt? Or will she have to sacrifice her heart and her destiny to save the ones she loves

Now in MADLY& THE JACKAL, how deep does love run? Deeper than the ocean? Deeper than memory? Deeper than magic?

Following their plan to save Atlas, Madly and Jackson return the spirit of Wolfhardt to his prison beneath the sea. But even the best laid plans couldn’t account for the surprises they find. This time, Lore aren’t their only challenges.

Madly is special in ways no one could have guessed and dark forces seek to control her. They want her power, but first they must weaken her. They need her beaten. Vulnerable. Near death. And alone. But that task isn’t an easy one with Jackson at her side. The strongest of their kind, the only way to separate Jackson from Madly is to destroy his love for her, to erase it from his mind. And his heart.

Is it possible to steal Jackson’s love from Madly? Or is their love the only truly unbreakable thing?

ABOUT M. LEIGHTON

Blog || Twitter || Facebook

I was born and raised in the United States, and I’ve lived in several of the fabulous fifty. Though I currently live in the deep South, I spent much of my childhood up North and hope to return there one day. A few other things about me: I believe that sometimes you have to look really, REALLY hard to find the good in people, but it's there. I believe that I'm shrinking (I swear five years ago I was two inches taller). I believe my husband is quite possibly one of the most amazing men in the entire world (I can't be sure because I haven't met all of them). I believe coffee and chocolate, when combined, could be the basis for world peace. I believe that Jesus rocks and communism doesn’t. I believe that white makes me look fat and black collects lint. I believe summer's too hot, winter's too cold and fall was made for football. I like dogs better than cats and the first movie in a trilogy is invariably the best. But most of all, I believe that love conquers all.

Pages: 233

Her life, her dreams and her love for Tor are all weighing in the balance. Will Dori risk it all in order to have it all?

Seaweed is a delcious little slice of heaven, filled with tantalizing secrets, beautifully intriguing character's, and wonderful depths of adventure and magnetic allure. Elle Strauss, has really out done herself with this little gem of a novel. Uniquely captivating and originally edgey, it's filled with mystical wonder and enlightment that will both surprise reader's and keep them engaged. It is an incredibly sweet and charming ya fantasy read that is incredibly easy to enjoy.

Strauss's introduction of the hidden culture in Seaweed is marvelously mysterious and definitely interesting on many levels. The main story background is brilliantly developed and pops to life on the pages, sparkling like the shining waters of the rich and vast deep blue sea. The character's are fun to get to know on a more personal level, as reader's delve into each of their stories and bring them to life across the pages. Some are deliciously likable and easy to connect with, while other's may have a tendency to fall a bit flat at times. The world of the Mer-People that Strauss created, is exciting, fun, and adventurous.

Overall, Seaweed is filled with beautiful mystical mer-lore, myth, legend, and romance that is sure to tantalize anyone who enjoys fantasy novels of this caliber. While it might not have been the most original or the best representation of fantasy revolving around mermaids in my honest opinion, it's still an okay book for when reader's want a fast-paced, light, fun read.

Amazon || Barnes&Noble || Goodreads

My Review for
Fractured Light
by Rachel McClellan

Fractured Light is a slow-building attention grabber that will draw reader's in with this incredibly creative paranormal power that builds and builds over the span of the story. Rachel McClellan has given new twists to old vampire tales. The story she weaves if full of mystery, intrigue, and wonderful atmospheric energy, that reader's will be absorded into it's haunting light and the energy it gives off. McClellan fills the pages with suspenseful adventure, romance, and some pretty amazing thrills. It's enough to tanatlize reader's appetite with what's to come.

If reader's are looking for a female heroine who is brave enough to know what she wants and will fight for it with everything she's got, then Llona is fits that bill perfectly. Wonderfully independent, a little foolish at heart maybe, but more than anything she's a survivor. McClellan writes her in such a way that she's incredibly likable and easy to connect with in such a realistic sense. Her story is painful, as she's lost both of her parents and just wants to be normal even though she is anything but. It will definitely pull and tug at reader's heartstrings.

Fractured Light is an intriguing world filled with Aura's, Vykens, Gaurdian's, and beautiful mythology that is incredibly entrancing. It is a novel that is bound to keep reader's playing the guessing game, while the guilt spindle has gone into overtime pointing it's finger at several suspects. The ending is wonderfully surprising and will leave reader's craving more. It has fantastic dialouge between wonderfully developed character's, the focus on the storyline at hand is flawless, and there are some rare comical moments and fantastic humor sprinkled throughout. It is definitely a paranormal story worth devoting time to.

She currently lives in Maine and finds the place terribly and hauntingly romantic. Loves the forests and graveyards.

ABOUT: Carol Oats

Carol Oates has never been one to remain still for long. After her mother’s mad dash to the hospital through the empty city streets of Dublin, Ireland, Carol made her debut into the world in the early hours of Christmas morning. Since then her pace has not slowed down in the least.

Carol was introduced to the world of supernatural books when, as a child, her family moved to a coastal suburb of north Dublin known as Clontarf; famous as the birthplace of Bram Stoker, the prolific author responsible for breathing life into the legendary story of “Dracula.” This stirred in Carol an early passion for reading about all things supernatural. When that passion was combined with a deep interest in the history and folklore of Ireland, as well as an active and vivid imagination, Carol Oates, the author, was born. Carol’s love of writing about anything not entirely “human" emerged.

Book Review & Giveaway: Frost by Kate Avery Ellison

Frost by Kate Avery Ellison
Publication: April 18, 2012

In the icy, monster-plagued world of the Frost, one wrong move and a person could end up dead—and Lia Weaver knows this better than anyone. After monsters kill her parents, she must keep the family farm running despite the freezing cold and threat of monster attacks or risk losing her siblings to reassignment by the village Elders. With dangers on all sides and failure just one wrong step away, she can’t afford to let her emotions lead her astray. So when her sister finds a fugitive bleeding to death in the forest—a young stranger named Gabe—Lia surprises herself and does the unthinkable.

She saves his life.

Giving shelter to the fugitive could get her in trouble. The Elders have always described the advanced society of people beyond the Frost, the “Farthers,” as ruthless and cruel. But Lia is startled to find that Gabe is empathetic and intelligent…and handsome. She might even be falling in love with him.

But time is running out. The monsters from the forest circle the farm at night. The village leader is starting to ask questions. Farther soldiers are searching for Gabe. Lia must locate a secret organization called the Thorns to help Gabe escape to safety, but every move she makes puts her in more danger.

Is compassion—and love—worth the risk?

Amazon || B&N

A Splash Review

Frost by Kate Avery Ellison is one of the most stunningly and vividly written young adult novels, that I've personally read in a while. With every flourish of her pen, she writes with such imaginative personality. The world of the Frost is a terrifying monster filled icey frigid place, with gorgeous scenery and very real threats of dangerous attacks. It's intriguing lyrical prose will pull you into the story that Kate Avery Ellison magically weaves and ensare you in its web holding you there until the last page has been turned.

Kate delivers a bright young daring herione, who isn't afraid to the unthinkable and defy the rules by taking in a young fugitive found bleeding to death in the forest by her sister. Gabe is anything, but a "Farther". He's kind, caring, empathetic, intelligent, and incredibly handsome. Lia soon finds herself attracted to him and quite possibly falling in love with Gabe, as the two grow closer. There is so much compassion and love exchanged between the two, that their romance is breath taking and beautiful. They are both in danger and it seems as though time is slipping through their hands as grains of sand slip through an hourglass. There's only so much time before the "Farther" soilders find him, the villiage Elder's figure out that Lia's been harboring a fugitive all this time, it's as if she's racing against the clock to get him to a secret orginzation called the Thorns who can help him.

The dystopian world that Kate Avery Ellison has created is hauntingly beguiling and indescribably melancholy. This stark dreary world is brimming with chaos and danger, twisting around every corner, that will definitely find you on the edge of your seats. It is a novel that many fans of dark dystopia is sure to enjoy.
